2004 Dragon Run Thread
It looks like this will outshine the 2004 Mini Vacation In Vegas in both quality and quantity!!
I'll be there in spirit, but I'm sending Bill (AZWilliam aka Dragon Slayer) out there to pick up my Dragon Shirt I ordered yesterday.
Hello?? I missed the memo somewhere. Why was the group picture at the dam moved from Saturday morning to Friday? What was wrong with Saturday? People who can't leave work early are still going to be rolling in on Friday and will miss the picture.
Also, it's the only time the whole weekend when the entire group is scheduled to be in one spot at the same time. It seemed like the perfect time just to wander around and look at everyone's cars. With the new schedule, there won't be time, as everyone's going to be immediately leaving for the MINI parade. On Saturday there's only the one drive starting at 9am that's scheduled in the morning. Somehow this change just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. :???: :???:

I suspect that there will be several picture "events" done at the dam. The official Dam Picture was moved to Friday since all those attending the MINI Parade on the Dragon will be gathering at the lower dam lot prior to departing. The original Saturday time was in conflict with a new (and one that sounds like a lot of fun) that needed to depart early in the day in order to return to the Fontana area by mid afternoon. That said, I would like to see a couple of times that we can all gather at the dam parking lot for some photos.
On a related note I think that unless another drive is put together that the event guide shouldn't change much going forward.
Thanks!
Mark

Thanks for the update Yucca. I was just checking out Killboy.com and found this sad piece of news....

So you may have heard about the rider who lost his life last weekend at the Gap. He appearantly was too hot going into the blind, sharp right-hander just past the stone wall pull off, which is about 1 1/2 miles in from the state line heading toward the overlook, and slid into the lane of oncoming traffic...where a poor guy in a Ford Ranger happened to be. Sucks for both of them.
So now these guys...
Picture of Tenn Hwy Patrol
...will be around for the next few weeks telling us to be safe...writing tickets for exceeding the artificially lowered speed limit. (55 to 40 now 30)
If they come in and start shooting radar, everyone should just go park it. Feel free to bring camcorders or microcassette/personal voice recorders along on your ride so you can document any harassment.
Considering it has been a year and a half since the last fatality on the Gap, and there have been about a million motorcycles pass through that road in that time, it's statistically one of the safest places in the world to ride. The only real danger to yourself is yourself...and of course the vehicles in the wrong lane.
So any body here in the military who could set up a major radar jamming unit at the gap?

An interesting change of events in my life...!!!!!
Seems I'm no longer employeed....
and...
therefore I no longer have any... excuses/reasons/responsibilities ...to prevent me from attending this years Dragon Run
I know it's kinda late in the game but ....timing is everthing in life.
Will lodging be an issue @ this late stage.???
All suggestions are welcome....
Anyone have a spare ...couch...lol???
Just throwing out feelers

Never leave home without the V-1!
Although I have seen law enforcement on the Dragon, there are very few places where they can position themselves. Word quickly gets around at either end of the road, so its best to stop and chat with others that have recently come down/up the Dragon in order to ascertain the likelihood of enforcement presence.
Rumor has it that the local sheriffs and highway patrol have an early bed-time, so Midnight might just be a fantastic time to slay the Dragon!

I use my CB to avoid cops... its more foolproof than radar detectors... but the downside is that its really only effective on highways (I only use it on long roadtrips anyways). But, hey... it's saved my **** before back when I drove a New Beetle at an average of 100 mph across the country. Truckers help ya out! Good thing I've slown down recently... Sprog II just keeps getting faster with these mods... its tempting to speed...
I have been driving and riding these roads all my life and the law enforcement in this area is near nothing. There is always a chance you are going to get caught if you play but here the odds are in your favor.
If they were as bad as some think me and the other sport bike riders in this area would be spending a lot of time in court. But instead we are having one more good time.

Sounds like a fun idea, but I wasn’t thinking of spending half a day parking cars for a photo shoot.
BTW Dennis sorry about the employment situation, I think there may be a room floating around at the Microtel or Fontana (but don't quote me on that). Also, somebody in the DC area apparently found a B&B down there with some space as well...

Just over the weekend a couple people found they won't be able to make it. Check Tapoco Lodge right away, they had a couple rooms.
