my gut says there is more to this story. Still a BEP convertible is pretty rare.
"Bring $450 cash for test drive..."
I guess I don't quite follow the logic of sell it for $2500 and needing a $450 key, with the promise of all this work recently done... OR buy the damn key and sell it for $3,000+ and let the buyer see all of these things in action.
Like you said, there's probably more to this story behind the (purple) smoke screen. Could be, though, that seller just can afford the $450 now and needs to be done with it.
Let us know what your friend/buyer finds out.

Lives in the marina and can’t afford a key?? Maybe he just works there lol. Pretty bad when the car is purchased with 2 keys and now you got none, no wonder it needed a new engine, probably forgot it needs oil too.
2006 FActory JCW
JCW dash mounted Shift light
18" JCW 105 wheels appropriate for the build year for the car (though I really don't like black wheels on these cars)
JCW factory strut brace
Looks like JCW CF hood scoop and mirror caps AND trunk handle
Chromeline Interior
Headlights and TailLights look clear
Center console/rest
Desirable BRG color
Low-ish miles for those that care.
And.... Cali car.
Depending on what is 'Really' wrong with the engine... this thing could be a great buy for a handy enthusiast.
The mechanics special isn’t a Factory JCW as auto JCW’s weren’t available in the US and the VIN decoder does not list the JCW option. Has a lot of JCW options including real JCW brakes, though. Might have been a loaded up dealer special from one of the few dealers who would install a 210HP JCW kit on an auto.
Regardless of 'how' it got the engine (I doubt it was an owner built JCW) ... Sweet car... $3500.... good price.... and the car looks like it has been taken care of.
JCW... like anyones JCW 2002-2005... Still JCW.... same kind of value as 02/05... Guess this one is just more rare.
Definitely a high-spec car from the dealer... with the R105/CF/HK/JCW-Brakes.
Ran across a few 2006 Dealer installed 210 HP JCW cars this year.... 2 with auto trans (reason I passed).
Some people really like the Auto cars... I've been in a few and they are super fun to drive as well.. If I lived in a big city...I'd probably prefer the Auto box.
Probably more of these out there.
If this were your car... what would you try to sell it for?
Thats a steal... low miles... Throw in one of WMW's factory JCW Long blocks for around $5k and you have one helluva R52 with some trick bits !!
And the knowledge that it's done right...
Heck... It may just need some TLC and the shop told him it would cost $5k....

Here’s a good site to find past and upcoming auctions for MINIs from multiple sites online and venues. Also a really good sales chart displaying hammer prices for past 5 years. This link shows the chart but explore.
Looks very clean. Might be worth a look since so close to you, krawzdogg. Does it have the red tartan cloth interior? I always thought that looked cool and is kind of rare.
But it drives me nuts when ads try to dismiss something as a cheap/easy fix: "...the ABS light is on (probably just from a cheap wheel sensor)." If it's that simple, fix the damn thing first before you sell it.
If you can settle for not having those three letters, you can still have fun fixing these three letters.
Those three letters are making things really difficult lol. It still has more miles than I would like and I completely agree with “If it’s that simple, fix the damn thing before you sell it”.
Looks like it does have the tartan cloth judging by back seat, fronts probably look like hell, or maybe just clueless, like the anthracite, probably doesn’t realize the rarity of that. I find cars being sold with problems, even if minor, indicates the owner has mentally “moved on”, which makes for some nice wiggle room for negotiation.
Maybe the buyer of the CR '06 JCW on BAT is a wealthy gal that chain-smokes in her car... and looks at the diminutive ride as a cute car to park in the city and not worry about dents or scratches with her bargain purchase. ... Don't worry ... she does the same thing in her $150,000 Rover... Ha.
I doubt that anyone on this 'bargain' thread is the one that bought that car, or others in that price range... the elusive barn find in a suburban garage is what were after
kgh
....
Ya did it ... ya found it... from your Butcher's friend who never is on the web, only uses his Jitterbug phone for talking to people.
$5500 USD... But you talked him down to $5000 and he threw in a fresh tank of gas and full synthetic oil change for your drive home 30 minutes away. You got a original-owner, covered, HVAC-Garage kept, 2006 Factory JCW, 26,000 miles, 6 speed, JCW suspension, JCW R95 wheels with brand new Michelin 4S tires and MINI-dealer installed Pads/rotors all around and a genuine-BMW AGM installed just one month ago (Just because he wanted it to be safe for the new owner) , JCW steering wheel, JCW Carbon fiber 3-piece dash/uprights , CF scoop, CF boot handle, CF mirrors, CF **** and handle, heated English leather interior (he's conditoned it 2x/yr with the full leatherique treatment since new) with anthracite headliner, slick-top, Aero Package, Chrono package, HK stereo, JCW strut brace, JCW shift light, driving lights, bonnet stripes. Driven only in June/July/Aug... on sunny days and fresh tarmac...by a smartly dressed, 65 year old 170lb driving-safety-instructor with a perfumed maiden in the passenger seat. No pets, no smoking, no food or drink ever (no cup holder to swing and turn on the auto climate control)
Dealer maintained every 6 months and all updates done with no leaks, all three keys on JCW key chains, all documents, JCW-Engine-Certificate, window sticker Stored on Jackstands from sept 1 through May 31. Freshly detailed and Ceramic coated with PPF and all stone chips repaired on the front just before the sale (again, just because he wanted it right for the new owner) ...
but none of those garish checkered accents
Thats what you guys are looking for here...Right??

You guys posting up in your local mini FB groups, seems that would be a good are resource. That, and hitting up any area meets when the virus thingy gets squashed. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Your local mini repair shops? larger mini dealers who carry a lot of used inventory? Put the bug in everyone’s ear. I think you could probably sit on this thread forever, but there are a lot more sitting out there waiting to be bought, even if it’s throwing out the “I don’t really wanna sell it” price..
Yes I’m definitely looking everywhere and have multiple people looking for me. Also willing to pay the “I don’t want to sell it price” for the right car.
