FS 1967 Australian Mini Deluxe
Hey Elprofe,
Very nice! I'm in the market for a classic, but I haven't figured out what version to get. In your price range, I break it down to two buyer's options.
Option 1) Buy a tricked-out performance-modded car like yours--which really appeals to me as I don't have time/resources to do restoration. I do have ability to maintain a restored car, though.
Option 2) Buy a Mk5 or Mk6, low miles and OEM stock. In theory, this appeals, too, as I'm told the new ones are very different than the Mk1- Mk3. The new ones are apparently more quiet, better brakes, spi and mpi is reliable (?) and so on. One downside on getting an later model OEM original, for me, is that I tend to like performance--hence mods. I'm not sure I want to spend $10-$16K, then add all the mods, which ratchets up the price considerably...
Ok, I'm not stealing your thread... I hope to set the stage for you and other NAM classic mini Vets to give me a community sales pitch for making an offer on your Mk1!
Great photos!

one note on fuel infected! minis is that no one has the software to diagnose issues. Spi can be converted to carb, but MPIs are a different animal.
1. checkbook restorations are always cheaper, why spend 24k doing it yourself when you can save 10k?
2. MPI cars are difficult to modify because the ecu wants to correct your modes, I've not heard of any chips available to fool the ecu.
3. No offers needed, priced as listed.
thx for looking.

Elprofe,
Thanks for your pm and additional info. I seem to recall reading somewhere that mpi's are way too sophisticated for the weekend mechanic. I haven't had a chance to talk to a mini mechanic regarding pros/cons of mpi and spi's. That said, what a pain in the **** should something (even simple) go wrong with the injection... There are probably less than 10 classics in the metro area where I live--not to mention little or maybe no professional mechanical support.
Ok, back on topic:
Your car is incredibly nice! Mechanically simple; Mods galore, Aesthetically awesome!
Selfishly, I hope I can learn more about these classics before yours sells. At this point, though, I still wouldn't know an awesome deal even if it jumped out and bit me.

SINCE there aren't that many cars there, you should fly over for the weekend and we'll educate you on what to look for and what sets one car appart from others.

The MPI cars can be converted to a carb as well but without a dizzy (ie you have to keep an ECU to manage the spark.) That is the setup on my car.
My two cents, if you are looking to spend in the low teens, I would look at a car (like the one the Elprofe is offering) that looks to be well sorted and cared for but without the expensive pedigree. For me, owning a classic is about the rush driving it not winning shows or having the Heritage Cert hanging in the garage (not that there is anything wrong with wanting a car with history if that is what you are in to.) I know nothing about Elprofe's car but that it the type that I would look into for that amount of cash.

Thanks for the info, Tall Mini.
I agree. For me, owning a classic has little to do with historic pedigree, per se. It's all about the driving experience--which is why the search is a bit daunting, but fun, as you can get quite a variety of cars in this price range. I'm performance-oriented, so it's most probable that I would be happier in a modded older vintage vs. a relatively OEM stock reVIN'ed newer one. (or maybe best of both worlds--modded newer vintage?)
Truth is, I'll never know until I drive a variety of cars--which means I need to be patient and locate/demo a few candidates.
What fun! How many other brands of cars have 40 years of interchangeable history?
Elprofe-- I'm checking my work schedule, etc., to see if I can make a trip to LA area to see a variety of Minis. Thanks!

Moving from Classic Mini Talk to the Marketplace, where this thread belongs. Will also edit the first post to indicate price and location of the Mini, which is required under NAM's Marketplace guidelines.
