Performance MOD for Justa

So I was reading the R56 Non S mod forums. And I wanted some opinions from club members. Looking at maybe a mod to intake.

In the following post by jbewley (Here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.com...9-2005ttk.html Post #21), he tried 3 different configurations.

"FYI, I have run the DDM, the AirVIP2 and just a K&N with the OEM air box with the following results.

DDM: Loud. Intake temp between 30 to 35 degrees above ambient.

Air VIP2: Not as loud. Intake temp between 19 to 23 above ambient.

K&N, OEM box: Not loud. Intake temp between 18 to 21 above ambient.

Power gain was about the same with each configuration. Intake temp was monitored on each, all the time, using a Scanguage II and the Garmin HD."

Based on this, a K&N drop in filter is almost as good performance wise as the DDM and VIP. So is that the most effient way to go (Considering; cost, sound and performance)?" As I stated above I am not looking for noise.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

The best mod for a justa is getting an MCS

Perhaps, but if you don't have a positive comment for our Members please take a couple of deep breaths and don't type.

Thank you - Don Suiter President MINI5280 (moderator of this forum area).

Hi Tank251. First off, if you want to avoid antagonistic comments like the one above, you might want to post in a "justa" thread (although I see you were trying to ask a particular sub-group of CO MINI owners, of which "Boosted Mini" is not a member).
Anyway, I have a KN filter and I did notice some pep when it first went in. It's getting a little dirty now though. The KN adds no noise.
Personally I would like to go for the afe cold air intake, which adds some Hp along with a little growl but I doubt it's much. Way Motor Works offers a combo CAI plus Megan cat back exhaust for R50s but that would get noisier. Removing weight like the spare under the car or the back seat would also probably give the car a little boost but would also increase road noise. Kind of going to add at least a little noise any way you slice it.

Hi Tank,

As you know I have an MCS, but the principle applies to both the turbo and the justa R56.

Good airflow and keeping the heat down is the best way to get constant HP and possibly a bit of a bump in HP but I would suggest you will not get much more than 1 to 1 1/2 from an intake.

Myself I would go with a free flowing air filter in the stock box. K&N or other good dry filter that you can clean as often as necessary.

If you open your exhaust a little with a free-flow muffler with low noise that might help a bit too.

Don

Thanks for the comment Stanislaus. I am not looking for MCS performance, just a little more pep then it has now. Although it is great compared to my 07 Accent (Now my daughter has it). The throttle response seems a little delayed sometimes. What is a "afe cold air intake"? Is it similar to the DDM or VIP? Thanks.

For the record. I didn't get a MCS because they seemed to have more problems then the Justa. No offence intended to MCS owners.

Thanks Don. I am considering trying the K&N filter since I am reasonably sure I can do that. The cold air intake would more likely be beyond me since I have ten thumbs.

Will the K&N or other free flowing filter affect my warranty? I am guessing not since I persume they would still stop dirt from getting to the engine.

Do I sound new to modding?

It's similar to the DDM, and there is a side-by-side comparison on NAM by a member who had each one installed (he preferred the DDM). People do seem to be happy with the afe as far as I can see. It's my choice partially because it offers a "dry" version of the filter as opposed to an oiled one, and partially because the fit under the hood looks better to me. You can see both here:
http://www.waymotorworks.com/02-06-c...mance/intakes/
An intake is on my "list" but I need new tires first...
I believe both the DDM and afe install are really basic, just swap them out for the old air box and return to stock if need be. I don't know about any warranty issues.
Lastly, you may want to seek out other members with automatic transmissions to sort out issues with slow throttle response.

Warranty with an air filter change should not be an issue with your MINI, check the box to see if they state meets or exceeds mfg. specs.

Throttle response with the automatic can be overcome with the SprintBooster, I do not have one on my MCS.

I have heard some positive comments from MINI5280 folks on the SprintBooster.

It is sold I believe at WMW and at MINIMANIA, both sponsers here on NAM.

Thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate it.

I think I will try the K&N filter first. Don you mentioned a dry free flowing filter. I like that idea better than one that has oil. Assuming I am understanding you correctly.

Stanislaus you mentioned you had one. Is yours dry or oiled?

Not sure what I am looking for.

Found this on amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/33-2386-High-P...pe=5&carId=004

Not sure if this is dry or oiled.

I didn't have much luck searching auto part sites. They either have tons of filters or no matches for my car. Of course I an not familar with the filters.

Anyone know a part number or whatever?

I think all the K&N filters are oiled or coated with something, requiring them to be at least cleaned up with a solvent kit they sell. Some filters have to be re-sprayed with oil every so often. My hope is the "dry" filters will require less harsh chemicals to maintain, although I am really unsure as to how one cleans the dry versions. Hopefully somebody with one will pipe up here. From my looking around, it doesn't seem as though Afe sells replacement dry cones so they must be considered "permanent".
As for the filter you link to, just be sure it's the one for your model and year. I had to ship mine back because the company sent the wrong filter by accident. If I recall correctly one of the air boxes has a notch taken out of one corner, making the filter shape irregular. If you order from Way Motor Works or Outmotoring, they can help you select the right one for your car.
I should also add here that some people order 2 filters for a quick swap so they don't have to wait for the dirty filter to dry out after cleaning.

All this filter talk is making me nervous because I haven't checked on mine for a while...
Here's a link to Outmotoring. The drop-down doesn't mention your model specifically so I'd ask them about it to be sure before you order

Hey Tank, new to mods is where we all started.

I agree with Stanislaus, source from Way or OutMotoring, they will get you the right filter for the Cooper.

Let us know what you do.

Don

Still considering the K&N filter. I will try to remember to post on what I decide. Thanks for all the input.
