MINI5280 Dyno Day - Saturday Feb 7th at MAC Autosport
Vicki,
Great you want to see what Bean can do for HP.
Look back in the thread and send me a pm with some info.
Do you prefer a morning or afternoon slot or will any time do ok?
Thanks,
Don

Update --- Dyno Day Feb. 7 - changed times
Here are the attendees so far and time slots, if we get more people we will adjust the dyno slots to 30 minutes versus 45 minutes.
We have 12 MINIs to dyno and a few spectators, all are welcome to come down and visit and enjoy the day.
Since this work is inside, we will do this even if a small snow falls or rain (2-4) inches of snow is ok and can be brushed off your MINI.
If you need to cancel, call me, pm me as soon as you know. Currently our signups put us at the $54.95 per car, if we drop one person it goes up to full price ($64.95).
Here is my list, if I missed you let me know.
#1 Jorge F. (nOmis) Dyno time: 09:30
#2 Fred A. (Fred's S Works) 10:15
#3 Dennis S. (no NAM name) 11:00
#4 Brady L. (shadyj) 11:45
#5 Rick G. (pauhana) 12:30
#6 Vicki & Bean (scribbledpaper) 13:15
#7 Umberto T (no NAM name) 14:00

Spectators: Chuck (minimaybee) Bryan (miniconcarne) and a few others. Some possible out of state folks.
The dyno times can be adjusted or swapped, please contact me, I want these firm one week before Feb. 7. If you miss your time, well don't.
Remember: coffee and donuts at 9AM, lunch is pizza at the shop.

Thank you Don!
I think the schedule works for me... I will be ready for the pedal to the metal after downing a few slices of pizza... Be warned!! everyone better shows up before my scheduled time slot, or the pizzas will be gone....
Micheal,
So we have a pizza hound in the group! Micheal?
Mike,
I imagine it will flow pretty fast since we only have 13 signed up to dyno.
Mike, I know you said last, but your not past closing time.
We will adjust as necessary.
I have a nice little prize for the day, not sure what we might want to award, most consistent HP across 3 runs, Top HP? I guess we should look at some options.
I know Rick mentioned a scheme for something at dinner the other night. Mr. G. do you want to send me an outline in a PM?

todays update Jan. 28
We have some good things planned for the MINI Dyno Day, prizes!
Donuts, coffee and Pizza for lunch, you might want to bring a soda.
We will award a Grand prize for top (HP) of all the MINIs and some prizes for top HP for each model type as well as prizes for Closest Guess to what your MINI is producing for TOP HP & TOP Average HP over the three runs.
Rick, Chuck and I are working the details, so come down and enjoy.
Today I went down to MAC to for a pre-dyno run. I wanted to see how they handled the new automatic.
One thing for sure, overboost will kick the automatic down when you try to hold it in M3 or M4. That really messes up a run, but the manual trannies will be cool.
With practice (after 7 runs), MAC has the technique down well.
Scooter is pretty stock (DDM CAI) but appears to be built on a very good day. I will get images for my top 3 runs. We printed the top 2.
For the folks looking for some detail, the temperature was 62.43F in the dyno area and humidity was 6% inside and was 22% outside. Outside temperature was 39/40. This was constant across all the pulls.
I had a fresh fill of 91 octane Conoco premium and a warm engine from the drive down from Louisville to Parker. DSC was turned off.
My two best runs were Runfile2 and Runfile6.
RF2 --- 202.89HP MAX TQ 222.41 after a short cooldown.
RF6 --- 197.80HP MAX TQ 211.64 run 6 was a heat soaked run, right after test run 5, no cooldown.
Max HP was made around 4500RPM stayed over 200 until around 5600RMP.
For those interested, they use 4 tie downs on the MINI and 2 fans. They check your oil level to make sure it is full.
Be sure your topped off for oil and coolent before your run.
The shop is full of interesting cars, 2 Austin Healey and a Fiat 124 race car under restoration. A couple of Subies waiting on parts and work.
Bill would really like some of the MINI Classics to come down and show off their cars, he really likes the MINIs. Also, take note of the pictures on the walls, Bill has some nice classic pictures of F1 and early racing on display.
Here is one of Scooter on the dyno. Scooter is a strong little R56.

Data logging allowed?
Thanks for the preview Don. On the MAC site, for their "baseline dyno" (in AWD Dyno page), there is a statement: "data logging is allowed, no tuning is allowed". The no tuning is obvious, but what is data logging? Something to do with the OBDI? Wondering.
Rick
Rick
Your right on the spot with the data logging. If you have a device (scan gauge II or similar) or a computer which records your environment, it appears to be ok to run it during the dyno pull.
One of the threads around here talks about a new OBD wifi unit that sends to the Iphone and touch. This product is used on the iphone/touch.
RevSoftware
The thread which talks about dynolicous is here which I have for my touch, but I'm waiting for an update. Rev, reads the obd via wifi, it appears more useful, but an expensive set.
I think some other folks have laptop setups which work via the obd interface.
Not sure what Mike and folks from the Springs have for this function.
So if you have it bring it, you might have to ask to sit in the passenger seat during the run, not sure if they allow that, but ask.

Don
Thanks Don. I have an OBDI-II device that hooks up to a laptop via USB. It's an ElmScan 5 USB. I've only hooked it up once, so I don't really know the software. Maybe I should bring it (and the laptop).
Rick
Rick
I was almost tempted but the hardware is backordered, maybe next time.
I would like to look at the software they have for the laptop.
Busy Graph Update
MAC mailed me all the dyno runs from Wednesday, this is the image of the top 4 runs.
It is a little busy.
One of the things I noted after I was finished with my runs and driving was all the various error indicators for ABS, DSC were on, normal result of being on the dyno since only the power wheels are spinning.
These error lights cleared after driving about a block or so. One thing I had to clear was with a scanning tool was a P1775/P1774 CEL. Easy to clear with the right tool (autozone or your favorite friend).
I think this is something which will occur on our automatic MINIs as this set of codes are a generic power train error code. The DYNO and MINIs automatic transmission diagnostics are not really made for each other.

I will try to show up for this as a speck-tater. I have a few things to take care of in the morning (puppy class for a 5 month old Australian Cattle dog) and in the afternoon(taxes) but will make it there after lunch. I can't wait to see some MINI brute force!
Good to have spectators, the more the merrier.

Saturday is looking good, we have had one cancellation due to work getting in the way.
It happens, so I will adjust the schedule list above and flex the on dyno time down to 30-40 minutes.
Please be flexible as this can go slow or fast depending on the car and the staff working the dyno.

Blu, they dyno with the DSC turned off, so the nannies don't mess up the dyno run.
I did my pulls without the Sport button on, some put it on. It will change the HP and TQ curves.
As it is the MINI drivetrain system ABS, etc. throws a lot of error lights during a dyno run.
All the new electronic nanies are not dyno friendly, but it is normal to have the lights come on during the run.

Okay, so I will admit I have no idea where the oil or coolent goes... Ummm... I don't even know what kind I am supposed to have. I never check! I have people that check!
I know how to open the hood (and that took a bit of learning) and where to put the windshield fluid.
I also know where to insert the gas and the fob.
That's my extent of car knowership.
lol
Really,
Someone want to pick up about 4 quarts of MINI oil and a jug of coolant.
Bring it along just in case someone needs a top up.
All kidding aside, most of our new MINIs should be just fine, I don't use any oil nor have I ever added coolant.
We have some Classic interest, Jim Shearer called this eve, I think he is going to bring his classic out for a baseline.
