Rick, Teena, Great video clips. Rick nice job, what program are you using to edit?

That Nikon D90 shoots some interesting video. Both sets have some great captures.

I'm working on results, I will post a image clip. Both Rick and I have all the files from the dyno pulls, you should be getting your own files in a few days from the IT tech at MAC.

If you don't shoot a message to the info email at MAC, sometimes they forget and/or get busy.

Fun day. A lot of nice pictures. More to come I'm sure.

Don

Teena you got some good pictures & videos too. Too bad something made you jump when Rudebox was just about ready to blow-up.
How about getting me the downloads of all your pictures.

One for our record books.

We will have to see about doing this again for a winter day activity.

Here is the image of the results, if anyone wants the excel formatted file, please let me know. Send me an email. Image can be downloaded or saved from my public Picasa album.

Great meeting you all.

Here's some pics and video that are admittedly self-centered.

Thanks to Don for organizing this. Now when are we going to this Jan guy that everyone worships out here to do some tuning?

Thanks Vicki. I should have just brought the video camera, as the wheel motion and the sound is much more dramatic than the still photos. I think I need to start shooting more video. This video was shot with the D90 (SLR), which is kind of weird (to me at least). I'll have to dust off the old video camera (at least it's digital tape).

Here are my still photos. From the same camera (D90) on SmugMug

Rick, your stills are amazing! You did an incredible job capturing those tires spinning! I loved all your pictures!

I'm seriously considering purchasing a new video camera. I did my taxes today and I am getting something back. Yahoo for me! lol

Yo, folks let me know if you do not see the image in post#80.

Btw, Rick G. has a 15% pulley not 18%, my bad.

You can go to the album and see it, if not in the post.

We have a list of mods for each car, but can we also get an idea which cars were using greater than 91 octane gas or had octane boost added? We have seen some interesting trends in the data but the lower 91 octane fuel causes ignition timing to be limited, thus lower #'s.

Don,
Thanks. I used the video editor in the "Nero Essentials" pack, which came with the graphics board when I built the PC. It's nothing special, but it crashed twice. This was my first attempt with this software. I used the MPEG-2 format.

Mike,
Didn't add anything. Just plain 91 octane from King Soopers. Do you think tire pressure (rolling resistance) has anything to do with it?

Data comparison

Rick
Rick,
We have too many variations of tire sizes, 16", 17" 18" + R45's, R40's, R35's, etc. to consider. From what I hear & read, all add up to a small amount.

Interesting to me is the data collection in the MC2 mag. article. Specifically the tan color chart. Before a Jan tune of $350.00 each + Dyno $ charge, they had base line HP #'s quite similar (almost exact) to mini5280 #'s. After Jan Tune, the higher # cars got the least improvement, the lower cars seemed to benefit the most.

Back to the text of the MC2 article, the manufacturing tolerance variation stack up mentioned, was the justification for the individual custom tune. I have, as the article mentions, a canned tune by Jan, done w/ out Dyno.

All in all, very interesting stuff. Thanks again to Don for setting this event up.

It was also interesting that most people that had aftermarket exhausts we getting lower HP numbers. We were speculating (while spectating) in the corner about the effects of back pressure and larger pipes.
Also almost everyone had their best HP numbers on run #2.
I think Jim (last run of the day) was the only one that had a specific tune for all the mods he has installed.
Wouldn't the MINI's computer factor out any difference in octane by adjusting the A/F ratio?

Exactly, Chuck. The mini computer will compensate by backing off (retarding) the ignition timing if octane is lower than needed. Less spark advance, less fuel, less HP. Several mentioned getting 93 octane fuel but Rick had great HP w/ just 91.

MAC claimed their Dyno's computer actually compensated for tire Diameter variation. My size tires rotate 841 revs per mile, Rick's 873 (data provided by Tire Rack dot com). That a 4% difference in final drive ratio (leverage).

The stock exhaust does provide more back pressure allowing the supercharger to "pack" the cylinders. They just don't sound as fast!

Well darn.

Some folks are seeing the image in post 80, some are not. I will correct and relink, but then most will have to go to my picasa to view.

FYI, I am running 91 octane from our local Conoco. No additives.

Per Mikes request, each of you please post your octane and additives, if any.

Mike, you have a Generic JAN tune? I did not note that on the dyno results, I will if you wish.

Posted a new image in post 80 or at my Picasa area.

Added the octane column.

I'm taking updates to mod lists, if you want more detail in my work sheet.

Straight 91 from Conoco. Unless the tune is set for higher octane you might actually show worse numbers. The higher the octane the cooler the burn so the timing needs to be advanced or motor compression very high.

More data - new format - adding information

Update with format change. Chuck is the engineer in the group. Nice additions to the spreadsheet.

So I just edited Don's post because I couldn't see the picture.
Also check your mods & fuel and get back with us if there are any changes that need to be made.

Very interesting results! While Chuck and I were spectatoring..spectateres..anyway we were discussing the exhausts. Stock vrs. aftermarket. We assumed higher numbers for the aftermarket. Mike you are right, they do sound faster! I really liked the Alta, had good sound.

Like the Alta Sport exhaust sound

I agree. The Alta "Sport" (there were a couple) on the R53's seemed to have the nicest sound without getting in your face. My YouTube video of the yellow MINI has a segment of just the exhaust, with sound of course. See post #78 above for the link.
