Bike Racks

Hi All!

Hope with the warmer weather you have been out enjoying your MINI's! I've definitely seen a huge increase in the number of them on my side of town.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some bike rack information. I need a bike rack for my 07 MCS and don't want anything mounted on the roof.
I priced out the one that I can get through Schomp (and about had a heart attack) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get a rear mount that's more affordable?? Also, any ideas on how to get it installed?? It's definitley not something I want to tackle on my own and will want it professionally installed.

Any suggestions/help are appreciated.

Thanks!
Shannon

I've also been looking for a rear mount bike rack and unless you want one that clips to the hatch, they are all expensive. You can get the minifini sportlink system for around $600 plus shipping or the minidomore trailer hitch for $325 and then pick the rack of your choice from thule, yakima, saris, etc. for $150 and up. Thes prices do not include installation so you also have to find a local shop that will install it or do it yourself.

I'm leaning toward the minidomore hitch plus rack solution because there is a good selection of racks to choose from and the hitch does not look that difficult to install.

I'd also appreciate any other suggestions.

Thanks!

There's a pic of spoon's roof bike rack in my gallery. the first pic there. It's the MINI original. It's a nice rack. I have the attachments for 2 bikes, skis and snowboards. If I knew they had the rear mounted ones when I purchased him back in 05 then I think I would've gone that route. There was a bit of a learning curve to get the bike up there at first but it's not bad now that we're used to it. I don't regret getting the roof mounted rack but if I had to do it over again then I'd definitely get the rear mounted one.

one more vote for the rear mounted racks. It makes me nervous to put much weight on the roof. The mount ares for the rack feet are plastic and can be brokern if over tightened. Also the roof is aluminum. I have been warned off dimpled roofs by some shops. I think the minidomore is the way to go since you can use the rack of your choice on your other cars as well.

did you have to drill holes to install the spoon roof rack. Because im tryin to stay away from that. Do you think it scares you when with things breaking or maybe the roof caving in?
