As far in as you are now its not hard, turn the motor to TDC, zip tie the timing chain, unbolt following the Bentley book, new head bolts and gasket - reverse the process. I would say if you do it go ahead and get the Head stud kit.
Is there really THAT much performance difference between the MCS and JCW heads? As far as I know the valves are just a tad bigger aren’t they? Wouldn’t you gain much more power by throwing a cam in there? I’m looking at getting a new head and build the bottom end but gotta save up for it
Trending Topics
The power increase of the JCW over the S is from a combination of 1.) Approximate 12% smaller pulley, 2.) 380 over 300 Injectors, 3.) A larger inlet airbox in later years, 4.) An ECU Tune, and 5.) The Head ports are worked. The Head is the same casting as the S and MINI has now revised, according to RealOEM, both the intake and exhaust valves to be the same part number from R50 to the 52/53 JCW. The cams have always been the same across the Gen1 models. The JCW has teflon coated supercharger blades, something the S was upgraded to in 2005.
Some where there is a post from Jan at RMW that the S head flowed approximately 108 CFM and the JCW head about 120 CFM.
Some minor reshaping/enlargement of the ports can achieve some good performance. The JCW head is an example of this.

Yes, I'm interested.
That said, I really don't have much to go by for a price to offer.
I'm well versed in various American car head costs (a few bike and couple of offshore heads), but not these.
I'd like to get a head to learn what the head can do as far as porting with my experience, sort of an outsiders point of view. Maybe a little out of the box thinking so to speak.
So I don't insult you, please give me something to go by, we'll go from there.
