Is the only gasket I used in my R53 race car and it lowered my intake temps drastically. I race in Sebring and Homestead and this was great together with my DFIC.
Since using teflon I experienced IATs drop by 12 degrees alone, I used it on the warm streets of Florida as well.
I wish I had seen this sooner. I'd have picked it up instead of buying oem. Never even thought about a teflon gasket to lower temps, although once I start driving it maybe I'll redo it. GLWS
Interesting. But was curious about potential of leaks....and what Nm to use to torque the bolts down since the composition of this gasket is not the same.
Additionally, how is it's composition is affected from varying heat cycles, thus will bolts require periodic re-torquing ?
Lastly, air entering and through the R53 intake manifold spends about .002 seconds in there while passing through. I dont doubt what you are seeing in a 12* deduction in IAT's ( scangauge II ?) but not entirely convinced it's from this gasket's composition...
Additionally I think the manifold receives a substantial amount of heat from its surroundings, specifically the upper radiator hose which is positioned right up against it and the radiator itself...
What mods were done to the race car ? Maybe something else has created this reduction ?
It was measured by my logs and also scangauge. My research resulted in high temps coming up from the supercharger, we wrapped the intake manifold and used teflon gaskets in our r53s, but then when we got the results and we transferred the knowledge to the E30s as well.
I checked the bolts and they never loose torque, it was just maintenance/pre-track routine. Your are correct, the upper radiator hose is an issue, but teflon proved to be more effective than regular gasket, there was a guy near ft lauderdale who conducted the tests and the results are over the web, it was near two years ago. The results primarily dictated that all the heat concentrates on the intake manifold area (supercharger, radiator heat, hoses) I even used hood vents (also for sale) and got better results. If I do it all over again, I'll use hood vents near the intercooler to help air flow out of the engine bay.
I learned with forced induction specially on r53 in hot climates, that huge chunks of power are loss due to heat soaking. I used to laugh at the m7 radiator spoiler thing, but it helped a lot to Marcos r53 dissipating heat.
