How does race chip work? Is it a piggyback, if so wont the ecu just learn over it?

 

For the longest time, turbo charged engines controlled by ECU's have been modded by suppressing the actual boost pressures generated.

By default a parameter is programmed to open the wastegate and limit boost pressure to a predetermined setting. If the actual boost measured is controlled (by the piggyback ECU) to output a value lower than actually being produced, the engines computer will compensate accordingly.

More boost is a byproduct of more air (fuel mixture would be lean), more fuel (injectors remain open longer), hence more power.

The plus is that it is an easy way to get an extra 50hp or more without physical parts and much labour. Completely reversible, and since the engine has it's own built in safety parameters, completely safe in the hands of 99% of the people.
