Close all doors
Switch to first on position (first click in the ignition), switch back off and remove the key.
Within 30 seconds, press and hold the unlock button and at the same time, press and release the lock button (3) times. (Must be completed within 10 seconds.)
Release both buttons, The doors will lock/unlock to signal a successful initialization.
If additional keys need to be initiialized, repeat steps 3-4 within 30 seconds
Switching the ignition to 1st position (first click) completes the initialization.

Most competent locksmith companies can also help.
also OP you ~might be a tad high for a used fob, as that fancy internet auction site has them for low competitive prices.
random auction seller says: "This remote has been previously programmed to another vehicle, please make sure your dealer or locksmith is able to reprogram it before buying,Mini dealer won't program a used remote for you. " - not sure how true this is, but and buyer should definitely be informed what their local dealer will or wont do for them.

MINI says they can only be coded once...after the first pairing it is junk for anything but the original car.
Hope I'm wrong, but I would suggest you provide a guarantee to the buyer if you are so confident....
If not, buyer beware.

Unfortunately these keys are locked to the vehicle VIN.
However, this one is in great shape and the case could serve as a replacement for someone who has a working key in a beat up case. You can normally switch the guts from one case to another.

If you guaranteed it was still a virgin unprogrammed key, you might be able to sell it for a lot of $$$$. A money back, mail it back to you guarantee would show your good faith in it...
We are trying to help you here get the right value for your key....
We would hate to have an unsuspecting newbie get ripped off, or even you for that matter....
As a sign of good faith, I guarantee that it was programmed to the car I had and will not work on any other vehicle. As others have mentioned, you would be able to take out the guts of your old key and put it into this new case. I don't know whether it can be reprogrammed for a car or not so that would be up to the purchaser. I know I was able to reprogram my old Nissan remote, but don't have any experience with these.
Not trying to ruin any sales etc., I just need a second key and have been down this road. Picked up a brand new key on eBay and unfortunately after contacting a couple of locksmiths and the dealer I found out the hard way that the keys are locked to the VIN. I've reprogrammed Mustang and Camaro keys and assumed this one worked the same way.
That is how the "puck" keys work, I can't speak about the Gen 1 or Gen 3 keys.
