How easy would it be to hook up in a car without the kit? Like would I need to wire it up and buy the switch for it?

I can't answer how easy it would be because I've not done it. I'm pretty sure others may have.
Please do a search for a DYI- 1st gen fogs and your bound to find it.
As far as the harness? Your car may be pre-wired. Check your local dealer.
