Possable event
Hey guys,
Just wanting to see who was interesed before I went up to the bored to see if this is something we can do. Just wanting to see who was interested in a rally or road trip up to the Smithsonian. Maybe it would be possable to get the DC, GA and or SC mini group to come. If this is something you guys are interested then lets gets started planing. First let's see who is interested before I go to the bored. I thought this would be something fun and we could also learn why we get there. LOL This is just a thought to see if we could have fun doing something and have a drive.

You might want to contact the DC MINI club ( www.dcmetrominis.org ) to see if they can help in the planning. I'm sure thet'd be able to let you know about things like parking and such.
Where are you looking to go? To the group of museums on The Mall or to the new annex of the Air and Space Museum out by Dulles Airport? (aka The Steven S Udvar Hazy Center)
Parking is a bear for more than a few cars downtown, but there is plenty of parking at the Udvar Hazy Center, but it's $12 a vehicle...

From what he was saying, I think he was talking about the downtown area. It would be the better of the 2 choices because of the variety of museums and other attractions within walking distance. Like you mentioned though, parking might be a problem. Are there any parking garages in the area?
Sorry for jumping in Nate. This is your idea, I guess I should let you plan it.

Well, the Udvar Hazy Center can take up half a day on it's own (and is 10 min away from my house!
)
As for parking around the mall, it's REALLY tough. A few of the museums do have some really small lots. Best bet is to park outside the city and take Metro in. However, on a weekday even this can be challenging as you're competing with several thousand commuters for a parking space (and they get there early!

My vote is for the Air & Space Museum, and the Udvar-Hazy Center. Is parking still $12/car, Mike? My kiting club puts on a show every year at the Udvar-Hazy, indoor flight. Good stuff.
Can't go wrong with the Enola Gay, right?

Sounds like a great idea. I lived outside DC in Maryland back in the early 90's and worked on PA Avenue for a number of years right across from the FBI building.
I would love to make this trip. I used to enjoy hiking over to the mall and visiting the museums during lunch, or reading on the hot slate seats of the Navy memorial.
I really miss that area.
I have to say though, I don't know where in the heck you would park. I used to take the Metro train to work everyday, and that unfortunately may be the best bet.
Now that we're approaching the 4th weekend, I am really getting sad. I loved spending the 4th in DC.
Cheers,
Debi

I lived in the Northern Va area from 1967 until 1990. I went back this past April to visit. Wow have things changed. I stayed out in Chantilly and parked at the Vienna Metro station when going into DC. Staying in Chantilly also put me close to the new Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport. I can remember when there were no traffic lights between RT 28 and Ox Rd on RT 50.
It took me a good 8 hrs from the time I left Charlotte until I pulled into Chantilly with stops and traffic.
If we drove up on a Friday and home on Sunday that would leave one day for maybe a trip to the Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport and maybe a short drive with DCMM and dinner.
One of our M2C2 member's wife works in sales for the Courtyard by Marriott in Chantilly and Fairfax and should be able to get us a deal.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm up for this as well. Its been awhile since I've visited DC.
I personally like the Air and Space, but ultimately I'm along for the ride.
Riding the Metro in seems like it would be the most convenient.

. The best way to get down there is to take the Metro commuter trains...
