JCW 210hp upgrade

Hi everyone,

My name is Tom Lamano, I'm a new member and I live in Charlotte. I have a 2004 MCS + JCW + JCW upgrade. I had the upgrade installed yesterday by Brent at Century Mini. On the way home to Charlotte last night, I could not detect the intake flap opening at 4500rpm or at any other time. The sc whine and engine noise remain the same. The car is faster however, about as much as you'd expect from a 10hp gain. I spoke to Brent this morning, and he confessed he has never heard anything at 4500rpm and he's installed ten upgrades. I'm wondering if the flap is stuck open. What has been the experience of other club members with the JCW upgrade installed? Thanks for the help!

Regards,

Tom Lamano

I didn't hear any difference until after I put 2,000 miles on the car. Not sure why, but that was my experience.

Welcome to M2C2.

Before I had the upgrade installed on my JCW MCS I had a BMP intake. I noticed the SC whine through out the RPM range. After the upgrade mine is not as noticeable until 4,500RPM. I due notice the whine is louder and the car, from seat of the pants is quicker at 4,500RPM and above.

I had the first install of an upgrade at Century. We were all curious about how it would work. The first thing we did while the car was still in the shop was bring it up to 4,500 RPM with Lee's hand on the flap to see if it would open. It opened correctly.

I will be at Hendrick MINI for Saturday at Hendrick MINI with M2C2 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am on Saturday, if you get a chance stop by.

Thanks
George

no change in sound

I have the JCW upgrade and they also tested it when it was installed to see that it opens at 4500 rpm. When i drive it i do not notice a change in sound but i am VERY happy with the performance. I would love to know what the ECU flash modifies. I know that the ECU flash must activate the flap and increase the fuel mixture at high rpms (larger injectors included in upgrade), but what else does it do. I love the setup. Great power and driveability.

George,

I too had an aftermarket intake along with cowl induction. The sc whine is not as loud now with the jcw upgrade, but there is more power. I'll try to make it Saturday. Maybe we can compare cars.

Thanks,

Tom

i really want to see how much the dyno shows since all cars are not the same and i have since stock cars has more than 15hp difference.

Not a expert on JCW, but i think it is normal that cars has different power.

What does the JCW upgrade cost? What does it change on a car with the JCW kit already installed?

Cirbo (trying to learn something new today)

JCW upgrade cost

I think I paid $525 for the upgrade kit and $200 to install. The kit is actually very reasonable. It comes with 4- 380 cc injectors (worth $400) and a cold air intake worth atleast $150. The ECU flash is a complete flash, easily worth $300. I am very pleased with the results. I also have no stumbles or yo-yos and it goes like hell.

Flap opening

I do hear the flap opening in both my 05MCS and in Jeff's 05MCS with the full 05 210HP JCW kits. It's not a big "roaring" difference that really jumps out at you, but you hear the supercharger whine, and when you blip above 4500rpm, the note of the whistle/whine/(however you describe that sound) changes. It's hard to describe, since it's not a change in volume, just tone...like it becomes more shrill above 4500rpm than below.
