Most people get it powder coated. I don't think any vendors sell a direct replacement.

yep powder coat or paint it re the most common ways to black them out. are you going to do the door handles also? if so them get them both powder coated at the same time and save time and money.

I have the gas cap powder coated -- relatively simple because it's made of casting metal (zinc and aluminum I think). But the door handles are plastic, so you *can* get them powder coated but powder coating plastic is a relatively rare and expensive process compared to p-c metals. Most people paint the door handles to mixed results. Remember in this case the end result is directly proportional to preparation effort.

Or... you could have Mike at Aesthetic Creations make you a vinyl cover in black, like the one he made me in Checkers. Of course, he'd have to modify it a little bit to completely cover your lid.

be carefull with the gas door. i sent my cooper works exhaust tips to be jet coated in flat black. at the same time, i figured i'd include the gas door. it couldn't take the heat. the compostion of the gas door could not withstand the heat. they sent it back looking like an oatmeal cookie. however, the tips look great. if you find a source for pc the plastic handles please share it.

thanks for all the thoughts i guess i will look into the powder coating for the filler cap, but i think the handles would get scuffed to easily anyway.

The gas cap can be sanded down with some 220 grit or so and coated a couple times with some good quality spray paint (I used SEM).
The door hands are a pain in the a$$ to remove. I sprayed mine with 2-3 coats of SEM semi-gloss black and I do have a few minor chips, mainly from my front tires kickin' up rocks. A sharpie can fix those tho!

I removed gas cap and lightly media blasted outer surface, then painted. Very easy. Handles I'll scuff with Scotchbrite and paint.

That's how i'm going to do my handles and grille surround, Joel. Be sure to post(or send me) some pics when you're done.

I also painted my gas door and side grilles...
