Shipping Wheels and Tires?

Hey Gang,

A seller is having problems sending rims and tires via FedEx or UPS to me in NC. Has anyone been successful shipping tires and wheels?

Tire Rack does this every day of the week... Alex any suggestions for private sellers?

Thx, DJD

You can use any number of ways.

You can cut cardboard discs the size of the rims and clear tape them onto the tires if you have rims mounted on tires. Send as four pieces via UPS ground, Fedex ground or USPS. Insure for value of the wheels/tires.

No extra padding needed and the cardboard protects the rim finish as long as the tape holds- usually it does.

Tirerack.com uses FedEx ground or air as needed.

Cardboard discs...EXACTLY. Here is a pic of how mine came from Tire Rack via UPS. It should be a no brainer..no need for a box...just use clear plastic shipping tape.

i can tell you from experience that those discs with straps often times fail
during transit especially when shipping heavier wheels... like 19" wheels with
275/35 size tires.

ive asked tirerack several times to consider boxes as optional packaging
where customers can pay extra. have not seen them offer that yet.

on the otherhand, i believe Edgeracing offers wheel packages with tires in boxes.

Tire Rack uses UPS and FedEx.

I've shipped close to a dozen sets of wheel sand tires through UPS all over the country. I've also worked for UPS for nearly seven years, so I see what kind of abuse packages and wheels/tires take goign through the UPS system.

Most of the sets I've shipped have averaged $100-130. If the wheel/tire combination weighed less than 35 lbs, I would bundle two of them together, with the faces of the two wheels facing in. This is the safest way to ship them, but is usually only economical if the two wheels/tires have a combined weight of less than 70 lbs, which is the irregular weight limit for UPS, and packages above 70 lbs tend to get expensive to ship.

For wheels/tires that weigh over 35 lbs each, I would package them individually. In either case, I would tape cardboard circles just slightly smaller than the diameter of the wheel to each side of the tire, and use packing tape to attach them. I would go around the sides of the tire at four to six different places, and each time would have at least 2-3 layers of tape. I'd typically use at least a roll of tape for four bundles of tires. Never had a problem with any damage.

Just received a set of wheels w/tires sent by a private party in Illinois - wrapped as described above. Used DHL and had no problems. I even made the sellers job easier by sending him prepaid shipping stickers and arranged for pickup - all online!

YEP.....Same here I have shipped and recieved several tires and wheels. I have found FedEx to be the cheapest

for wheels I use cardboard disks.....poke small holes in the cardboard, for the zips and sinch tight then I put tape along the perimeter to keep the disk from sliding

tires are easy as pie.....just put label straight on the tire

I recently shipped one s-light with RF tire for about $20 via fed ex so $80 - $100 for a set is quite reasonable

I'm the seller in question...when I presented the wheels at the UPS counter, they said the wheels needed to be in a box??? Perhaps, as I suggested to the purchaser, the Saturday crew is unfamiliar with the rules??? I'm stumped!

How did you have them "packed" at that point?

Same experience here

We generally find FedEx ground to be cheapest when we've shipped wheels and tires, the SO packs them up but good all encased with home-made boxes and padding sized to fit (it is very time consuming but the only way to insure they get there in perfect condition)

In my case it was FedEx ground, poor custom made wheels

Kinkos!

Hi Meb, I just shipped a package today at the local Kinko’s-FedEx. I was stunned to hear they ship wheels all the time. The guy behind the counter acted like everyone brings tires to Kinko’s! Same 'schpeel', cardboard disk and tape. No problem...3 day ship from your location. If you still want to sell the wheels, FedEx seems the way to go.

Thx
