Cam just for Coopers?
There's been a thread going on about lack of parts for the Cooper relative to the S. Well, a buddy of mine who does a lot of dev work on Minis is willing to roll a cam for the cooper if he can get 10 people to step up and order one. He's not active here, so if you're interested, just PM me and I'll hook you up. I don't get anything from this, it's just a public survice for the Cooper crowd!

Less than what's out there...
but really, I'm just a match maker here. If you're intersted, PM me and I'll hook you up with the source and you can get all your questions answered without me screwing up the information!

Let's see if there are 10 adventurous Cooper souls...
or this is just more smoke with no flame. I hope they step up, as it would get yet another needed part into the Cooper arsenal. So far, no PMs to me....

There already is a cam for Coopers.
What would be the difference from a Schrick cam for the MC?
Price?
How would it work with various ported and polished heads?
Don't you have to design the cam and head to work together or is it more of an independent cam design (one size fits all)?
Changing cam alone wouldn't yield much difference. Or maybe not enough difference to warrant the cost of labor and parts.
Therefore the market for a cam would be with MC owners that are going full out on engine upgrades. Not that many willing to do that in my area. Like zero. Not to mention what it would do for the engine warranty. Most MC owners I know are rather conservative on upgrades.

rocking.. I agree with you on the MC owners being conservative on mods! However a camshaft on a stock engine WILL build more power, like the Schrick, and if there is a gain of MORE than the 7 whp that cams makes, for less money.. there might be a place for a new camshaft.. The MINI market is new.. not the 4 cyl s/c or n/a engine, and there are grinds out there that will rock.. for less than the cam choices we have now... I feel in the near future there will be a lot more to choose from. Thumper Performance is working on a few grinds as we speak.. they will be dyno'd on my car. then the cost/specs/power ratings will be post ( in the future) and there are other grinders out there also... FYI.

Zackly.. on the Custom Grind!! and those guys are good!! However, I feel most of the 2nd Gen cams will pretty much be all custom... The cam grinder might not have YOUR complete engine specs.. but will hve enough to put a cam in the middle.. for power and torque for the MCS. That is where the Schrick is at this time.. a consertive camshaft for all, ( ok not all... most then??) We here are going to test and dyno a few different ideas ( grinds) and then go from there... cam change is easy compared to the rest of the mods... but like I said, we are at least 4-6 weeks away!

Everyone again seems to forget the most important things of adding a new cam. Without doing the below you end up with just another bolt on your car and mediocre performance.
1. Having the correct cam for your set-up
2. Having the correct software tune to take advantage of the cam
MTH, Shark, Unichip etc has not shown that it can effectively do that.

Matt,
What will this offer over say a Schrick cam, or something like this
.
Also, can some one edumacate me on this? Do you just replace the cam? Or do you have to do other things to get the full effect? And how does ECU programming interact with this? Can I just call MTH and ask them to change my programming? Will they be able to do that without knowing the specifics of the part installed? Or will I need someone to custom tune it? And what will the expected drivability be? Will I still be able to drive in the 20 mph traffic to work?

cam..
Yep!! the answer is YES!! However, that all depends on the camspecs you choose!! I have a feeling that the cams will be out there.. and the cam you choose HAS to able to make it on the ECU ( stock Or modified) !! As for the English cam shown.. didnt see the specs.. but the price from BPS to USD makes it $975.24 !! rocking.. it better be more than the 7-8 hp the German cam offers.. lol!!

Cam profiling has been done
as long as there have been cams on cars! Like Thumper says, pretty much every offering is a massive compramise (like the original cam). I don't know what specs would be or price or the like (but it sure wouldn't be a grand!).
Anyway, if you are interested, PM me and I'll connect you with the guy who is willing to talk to you and get this done! He's doing lots and lots of cams for his divelopment for drag in modified Ss, working on a road race cam for the S, and has now said that he'll do cams for the cooper if there's interest. What exactly that cam would be would depend on the common interests of the people who step up to start the ball rolling!
Want to know what you may be able to get? Talk to the cam guy..... I honestly don't know the answers, as I haven't done a cam on my car yet, and I haven't spent tons of time researching cam offerings yet.

I'm not sure if I agree completely,
but it may just be semantics. I've met those that have run cams on stock heads with stock ECU, they get benefit, but don't get all the benefit that a full synergistic build would deliver. But sometimes, that's all the wallet will let you do!
As for tuning, more and more shops are offering tunes, some that go pretty deep. FWIW, the cam guy also has the DimSport SW, and can do ECU tuning. For those that don't know what DimSport is, it's an italian company that sells ECU tools that covers the Mini. Before you all send them e-mails asking how much, it's for tuner shops and is more than $5k for the base product.....
But the market is still speaking with it's silence. I've had NO requests to play match-maker. Cooper owners! Step up!

Yes.
the head is the same, the valves are different. I think the S uses Inconel for the heat of the boosted motor, but the valves are a bit heavier. The cam is the same as well!
This means that whatever has been made is a compramise that will work on a 1.6 NA motor with over 10-1 CR, and a 1.6 SC motor with a bit over 8-1 CR. Seems to me that there ought to be a way to optimize for both apps.....

I agree.. the heads (save the quality of the valves) are the same!! Intake/exhaust runners, combustion chambers and the cam are the same!! By bolting a S head on a MC you will gain.... quality valves for the boost! that is it!! Forced air ( positive air pressure ) is what puts the power to the MCS. and it IS proven that a small head will make gobs of power under boost!! The N/A engine will make power also, but the + air pressure, out weighs trying to naturally FEED the head vs.. being BLOWN!! ALL the math is out there... bigger valve = bigger gains.. as compared to what?? Better port work / bowl work/ valve job will allow more power than the big valve head. But then you get to where all the port and bowl work isnt enough for an engine and that is where the bigger valves come in!! But with ANYTHING bigger.. you will loose a little lowend.. how much?? Noticiable on the SOP meter and maybe enough to become a pain when in traffic!! ME?? I sure wont put a +2 valve size on my engine if I am only at 15 lbs boost!! There has to be a time when you have beaten yourself up on tweeking every ounce of power.. and it comes down to "Needing the larger Valve size" !! However 90% of us will NEVER reach that plato...225- 250 WHP is do able with the stock valve size and the work done to the head as stated!! IF you need more... then next head is the 2500.00 range!! cool?
Camshafts are the same!! Keep it small till you have reached ALL the power you can out of it!! Race cars that seldom see rpm under 3500... they can put anything their computer mod will allow.. all they want is power on the straight and out of the turns...! cool?? Seeing high HP cars on the street rocks.. but there is a level of expertice that keeps them there.
I have two MCS with my head.. one is more power than the other, one has a lot more mods than the other, and there is MORE power in them.. just takes the software to catch up !! the MC that has my head , is rocking ( dyno in Jan) but that heads is different ( port and bowl ) than the boosted MCS.. and there is probably a lot more power in the MC also.. Point being, bigger isnt better..If you have ever ridden in a 210 + WHP MINI.. you know that it Fly's!!!! 225 or 240 is scarry!! and busting a lot of 5.0s and rice!!

This brings up a good point...
Any of the current S head providers can surely do a head with the port and polish, stock or only 0.5mm larger valves, and port work that doesn't open them up as much as a high HP S head to maintain flow velocity, et voila! A performace Cooper head!
And it's sounding like there are sources for Cooper cams, if one is just willing to dig deeper than looking at parts for sale lists that are on the web. Have to go back a generation in technology and use the phone!
