Has there been a post on how to quickly identify the difference between model years? Transmission doesn't count because you can't see it...,,, But what about other easy to identify things to immediately tell what year the car is on the road?

I'm driving a 2006 and I believe it is the only year with solid red tail-lights. Correct me if I am wrong on that...,,,

What's the easy way to determine model year for the 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005?

 

I can quickly tell you that the grill changed from 2004-2005...also, as you mentioned the rear lights changed...also the Xenon lights changed....as for 2002, 2003, 2004 I would assume the best way to tell would see what colors were offered that year....

anyone else know of anything?

 

2003 had no electrical plug in the boot. Aw, forget it. You said on the road.

 

the cowl vents on my 02 are different than subsequent models: fins with foam below vrs. bee hive (although I have since replaced them with the newer style), the plastic cover on my intercooler doesn't have the 2 little braces in the front opening that support the middle. Beyond those 2 things, I've never figured out any other differences. I bought my car with R88 wheels and I've never seen another MINI with them fitted in person or in pics)(see my gallery). My favorite mechanic at MINI of Peabody, Bob Says he's never seen another either.It was a June build for what that's worth.

 

the bumpercovers are different from 02-04 and 05-06 on the MC.

the reverse light on the 02-04 was clear and in the spot now occupied by the red rearfog/black plastic filler plate.

The lower arch trim and bottom plastic trim on the rear MC bumpercover changed from 02-04 and 05-06

Colors:
silver roofs - 06 only
solar red - 06 only
BRG, Indi Blue, and Jet Black were not available in '02 MCS production
(lots of other color availabilty difference year to year - solid gold, liquid yellow, velvet red, silk green,...)

Cabrios are 05-06

 

Silver U-stripes are '06 only...(like on my car! )

 

I keep seeing aftermarket rear tail lenses that will only fit 2002-2005. Did the shape change or just wiring??

 

Same shape, but the reverse light(s) moved from the center bumper to the tail lights, and the fog to the bumper. Also, the turn signal went from amber to red.

 

It's easy. The pre-05 cars are the much cooler looking ones.

The Shark fin antenna (No Mast) was only available if you order the nav package in 02-04.
