Proud new member with a question!

Hello all!

I recently became a used MINI owner two weeks ago, and as I was reading through the owner's manual. I thought it was cool how you could open the tailgate by holding down the unlock button on the remote for 5 seconds, but when I tried it, the windows rolled down instead.

What am I doing wrong?

Oh, and here are some pictures of Stella (named after Charlize Theron in The Italian Job ) and my beautiful girlfriend.

Congratulations! Yeah two beauties there! Nice view from there too!

You can ask your dealer about your remote's behavior as I understand those sorts of things are dealer programmable, usually for no charge.

Welcome to NAM!!!

when i hold my unlock button my windows also go down ('03 MC) ive never heard anything about opening the hatch, i know pressing the unlock button twice unlocks it, but not physically popping it open

Weird, because that's what it says in the manual.

ellistotle, what year is your MINI? there was a change in key style, with different buttons, i think for the '05 models. older cars had to choose between comfort opening (the windows) and opening the hatch with the extended hold. this is dealer programmable. newer keys have a separate button for the hatch.

There is a button on the newer keys that unlocks just the hatch, but I've never hear of the hatch being automated, however the windows/sunroof can be opened by remote, which is programmable by the dealer.

My MC is an '02. But if I have to choose between opening the windows or opening the hatch with the remote, I'll stick with the windows.

Welcome to NAM, ellistotle! Beautiful MINI! The '02 key does not offer a separate hatch opening function. If you push the wings logo on your key once, it unlocks the driver's door; twice, it unlocks the passenger's door and the hatch. Hope that helps.

That's a dealer programed function. The only way to change it is to go to the dealer and get them to do it. There is actually alot of functions that you can change if you go over the manual (at least with the 06).

I have an 05 MCS seperate hatch button on key but also think it just can unlock the boot not open it but I've never held it down for more than a couple of seconds. But I'll give it a try 1st thing am. Nice looking MINI! Congrats

ellistotle - Without trying to sound too randy, nice ride!

I think people are getting confised by what 'open' means - IMHO, I always thought it was UNLOCK, and not automagically unLATCH. On my '02, if I barely touch the boot handle to pop the latch and don't pull it up, it'll click back down into the first 'catch' of the latch - which makes the auto-open (unlatch, not unlock) kinda useless in my position. (But my car doesn't do any of that..)

Cheers!
Mike Fox.

WOw, it's almost been 9 months since I joined NAM. Since then, I've gotten tons of ideas in modding (the exterior, at least) Stella, so as a way to repay NAM, I will definitely update with some pics some time soon!
