I like it because it was both cheap and the stock airbox plastic does a good job keeping out the heat.
COOL!
Is the filter free and clear all the way around in the stock box ? Just for INfo, I think www.MYMINIpart.com has an ITG filter that is also designed to pop right in to the stock box.

If one wants to stay in the stock location, the stock box seems to be the best insulator, and maybe should not be discarded so quickly. Nice job! Bart, I wasn't aware of that. Nice find. it looks like you are missing an "s" on your link: http://www.myminiparts.com/.

The base of the filter touches on one side of the box. The entire filtering surface is free and clear.
I believe the ITG filter is for the JCW intake.

There are a number of advantages to this...
1) Completely thermal-sealed from engine compartment air. No need to buy a CAI airbox top.
2) Plastic does a pretty good job of insulating, better than just metal at least. Plastic does become heat soaked after a while, but it takes *much* longer to do so than metal does.
3) The ECU and battery power station are unchanged and hold their stock locations.
4) It looks bone stock as far as CARB and other smog regulations are concerned.
Nice job!
Best,
