My Home-Made CAI

Here is my home-made CAI.

Parts used:
Stock airbox lid.
Airaid 700-430 cone filter.
3 inch pipe 45 degree elbow hacked to fit.
Glue and silicon caulk.
Also increased the size of the hole in the lower portion of the airbox to 2.5 inches with a hole saw. Sealed connection to cowl with foam.

Total cost: $34.00

did you notice any increase in anything? sound, power, etc? it might also help to use the hole saw to cut up the cowl plastic to let air in that way.

Sound is a bit louder not bad really. I had already cut the larger hole in the cowl. The power is definately better along with the throttle response.

I like it because it was both cheap and the stock airbox plastic does a good job keeping out the heat.

COOL!

Is the filter free and clear all the way around in the stock box ? Just for INfo, I think www.MYMINIpart.com has an ITG filter that is also designed to pop right in to the stock box.

If one wants to stay in the stock location, the stock box seems to be the best insulator, and maybe should not be discarded so quickly. Nice job! Bart, I wasn't aware of that. Nice find. it looks like you are missing an "s" on your link: http://www.myminiparts.com/.

The base of the filter touches on one side of the box. The entire filtering surface is free and clear.

I believe the ITG filter is for the JCW intake.

There are a number of advantages to this...

1) Completely thermal-sealed from engine compartment air. No need to buy a CAI airbox top.

2) Plastic does a pretty good job of insulating, better than just metal at least. Plastic does become heat soaked after a while, but it takes *much* longer to do so than metal does.

3) The ECU and battery power station are unchanged and hold their stock locations.

4) It looks bone stock as far as CARB and other smog regulations are concerned.

Nice job!

Best,

-- Don
