Umberto gets rear ended!

yesterday, Umberto was at a dead stop at a red light and a Ford Taurus apparantly had his gas pedal get stuck and rear ended me. I heard crunching metal, the stuff on my parcel shelf went flying. The glove box door popped open and spilled some of its contents. The guy hit me and pushed me forward then hit me again and then came to a stop riding up my bumper. I think he hit me fairly hard ....at least 10 mph or 15 mph. There was strong smell of burning brakes as he was hard on the brakes trying to stop before Umberto helped him to stop...the damage to the big taurus..a scratch...the damage to Umberto...also just a scratch on the chrome bumper strip....I was very impressed with how the car held up...although now my neck is a wee bit stiff

Sorry to hear that, hopefully you and Umberto get better. I heard from a friend that Tauri, (plural) are the most picked up cars by tow trucks. I will be watching out for them. Take care

Glad it wasn't worse! You may only see that scratch on your bumper, but I'd bring the car in to your dealer and get it checked out, all the same. A good knock can screw up all kinds of things. I hope you got the other driver's insurance info.

I agree with Chris, you might have damage behind the bumper cover that you can't see. I'd get it looked at just to be safe.

right from where I was hit, since I had the day off, I drove out to my dealer, MINI of Peabody, and they put it on the lift and checked it out thoroughly ( if a 'lift' in England is what we call an elevator, what do they call what we call a lift where they raise your car up?? ) and said absolutely fine, just the scrached bumber strip...I did get the the other other driver's info..he was very appologetic and realized he dodged a bullet as he a rigid sturdy car driven by a relatively decent guy who's MINI is basically unscathed instead of hitting a group of school kids...again, very happy with how the MINI held up!

The only other traffic incident I had with Umberto was a year ago...I posted it in a thread entitled True and Amazing Mini Stories...the end result of which was that backing up and scraping against the curbing caused only a bent wheel which was relplaced for free but could've been infinitely worse.....here's what I had written:

I pulled my 04 MC into a parking spot on the street and the truck in front of me starts backing up.....I honk...he keeps on backing towards me..I honk again, then say "oh sh*it! and then screech in reverse...the truck keeps on coming backwards.....so now the two of us are backing up down the road at about 10 mph, me blaring the horn for about a block and a half....so I now give another burst of speed and screech around a corner backwards only to see the truck keep on going backwards in a perfectly straight line and eventually smash into a parked car.....the truck was EMPTY!!....some young women had put the truck into park, almost, and the truck slipped into reverse!

Sorry to hear of your incident. Glad you and your MINI aren't hurt too badly. I hate to ask, but if you wouldn't mind, what is the color of your MINI?

I'm in Concord, MA. The reason I asked is I wondered if it was red. I wanted to get a red one as personally I think the MCS is one of the few cars that really looks good in red. Trouble is red cars seem to get rear ended all the time. I have a friend that got a Chili Red one and was rear ended the first week she had it. I, myself had an e30 M3 a number of years ago that got it up the butt three times. The last time it was very similar to what you describe. I was sitting at a light behind about 15 other cars and a woman drove straight into me at about 20 MPH.

Dont know if its color blindness or the fact that the brake lights being red on the back of a red car is harder to see or if there's some other reason, but it seems red cars are more susceptible to this. When I saw your message this morning, I was just curious if your car was red too. Again sorry about your mishap.

Wow! You are lucky - very little damage.. We got rear ended a few years back and it wasn't pretty - $3000 worth of damage... We too were sitting at a traffic light dead stop...

Glad to you hear you were not seriously hurt - hope the neck gets better soon and that you've been to the doctor to be checked out.

Donna
