SC Pulley Removal Tips

Hey Guys,

Are there any tips / tricks / ideas on how to remove the supercharger pulley?

I have the tool, and I’ve been able to lock it down pretty tight without slipping, but the pulley will not budge. I have sprayed some penetrating lube on it; just waiting to see if that helps.

Any ideas on how to make this go a bit more smoothly?

I have learned over time with these cars that all pulleys/bolts can be hard to remove .

Have you tried to heat the old pulley first then spraying the penetrating lube right before trying to remove it ?
usually penetrating lube is a patience game , having to spray it a couple of times and leaving it for quite a while between sprays

I do have some patience when it comes to spraying the penetrant; I don’t have a way to heat the pulley though, although it would probably be a better (and faster) solution. Thx!

One thing I remember is when a group of us were removing a club member's pulley it was scary how close it came to the front "frame" member on the right side before it popped, and I mean released suddenly with no warning. It was tight to get it out afterwards, but we finished with no issues. I think heat could help, but don't go crazy with it, and don't pound on the shaft. Good luck!

Heat - use with caution.
If I can remember correctly -There is a rubber seal behind the pulley in the snout of that shaft.

Yea, it’s becoming a pain in the butt, and almost more of a headache than what it’s worth. I’m beginning to rethink my plan…
I’ve got the SC ready to install; did the oil service, and cleaned it up; looks brand new! Wanted to run the 15% reduction, but I’m tired of fooling around with it! HaHa!

I bought a used Dinan pulley on eBay. It came with a supercharger attached. Maybe this is why that happened.

HaHa! That’s funny!

I’ll probably still try and mess with it later on; just a bit of frustration. I do have a friend in Daytona who may be able to help, whenever he has the time. He has is own shop and is a former MINI tech from Orlando. About an hour drive for me. May need to do a road trip…

"Patience is a virtue". A BERNZOMATIC propane torch from Walmart with piezo start will set you back less than $25. Also, have you tried KROIL? It's the best penetrating oil on the market. I believe ACE hardware stocks it.

Watch the ModMini video if you haven't...

I purchased and used the same vice chain when R&R-ing my SC pulley. Made the task so much easier and without damage.
Some have also had success gripping the pulley/pulley tool using a good quality oil filter wrench.
