Then it'll just go away. Last time this happened was three weeks ago and I changed all rotors and brake pads. Anyone know what this could be. When this happens the brake pedal almost feels like there is a crunching to it but then just goes away.

are you saying you had the issue, swapped everything brake related, have no change? there are only so many options.

"crunching" sounds like maybe a wheel bearing.

the other easy thing would be the CV axles.

have you put it up on stands and spun the tires? do you have an idea of which side is making the noise? what other troubleshooting have you done?

I didn't put it up on stands
The axles are less then a year old. The strange sound only happens once in a while. I'll have to go under the car and check it out

The ABS/ASC lights are triggered by the wheel sensors. When doing the brakes were those replaced or detached in some manner?

The mechanic replaced two but said the other two he couldn't because the pigtails were bad and disconnecting them would break the plastic of the pigtail

That's a common problem on older MINIs. Here's a link to a pigtail to splice into your wiring that will replace your broken component. I used these when I replaced the sensors on my MC40.

you can also get the plugs themselves. i bought new plugs, broke off the old ones, and installed fresh plastic w/o having to splice any wires.
