F54 Front Springs/Struts

Hi all -

First time posting for this car - though I didn't post much with my previous Mini.

Anyway - 2017 Clubman Base All4 Automatic - 67K. Sure I wish I had an S & a stick, but still a fun car & it was "inexpensive". However I live on a dirt road & the potholes finally did in the right front coil spring. Totally busticated.

In searching for new springs (& struts - as I'm sure these are pretty well cooked) I find nothing except lowering kits. I don't want to lower the car! It's already a little lower than I'd like for Vermont dirt roads & snow. I do, however, see very affordable kits for the BMW X1. They sure look similar - but does anyone know if they are the same? Many things are, but I don't want to spend $400 on something I can't use.

Any help appreciated!

FCP Euro seems to have them. Wasn't seeing too many other options, like you said.

Thanks for the reply!

I had seen that, but by the time I buy 2 (if one's gone, the other won't be far behind) & shocks, bumpers, etc. it starts pushing a grand in just parts. Just hoping to find a less expensive way forward.

I would start surfing eBay for used stock pieces.

Thanks - I have looked, but not found too much. Since the car is my daily driver I can't wait too long - though at least I have a pickup I can use.

Yeah, unfortunately all aftermarket springs will be lower and stiffer than stock.

The only possible alternative would be using aftermarket F60 Countryman springs. This is only a theory I have, since I have not had the parts in my hands... F60 Countryman and F54 Clubman ride the same platform, and all suspension parts are shared, with the exception being springs and struts. I am under the assumption that if F60 Countryman springs were installed on an F54 Clubman that the ride height would increase.

I currently don't have an indoor place to work - slots filled up with either a tractor or a boat - so experimenting would be difficult.

What got me thinking along these lines is hearing from various sources that an F54 "is basically an X1". I found this site for X1 shock/spring combos that certainly look similar.

Be careful dude , always check part numbers and compare them between F54 and X1, and you will chocked by the results .

Long story short , no you can't install X1 shocks and springs on F54

The 2-series sedan is supposed to be closer to the F54 Clubman. The X1/X2 are supposed to be closer to F60 Countryman.

As mentioned, ALWAYS triple check part numbers, and verify compatibilities. They may look the same, but may not work as expected.

Just checked and for https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Sit...h/31336873385/

Their is no aftermarket that is a match.

You can do springs but its lowers it ~1.5" https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2017-...nsion/Springs/

https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2017-...ion/Coilovers/ Coilovers you can get to stock height and then have dampening which the Genuine suspension does not have? https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part.../054788la01~a/

I hope everyone had a great Christmas - or whatever holiday you celebrate.

What a PITA this is turning out to be. Just as I was about to check the car more carefully we got a bunch of snow & then the temp dropped below zero F, then Christmas took over. Anyway, enough whining.

I got a good offer of barely used JCW springs & struts, but it seems they are different from a Base All4? Then I looked at the kit from ECSTuning above, but my car has EDC.

So - it seems I'm back to stock springs - but none of the places I've found online (even Mini dealers) seen to have springs that will fit a 2017 F54 Base All4 with EDC (the FCP ones say non-EDC - why I don't know). Guess I'll need to check with my local dealer. They're great folks, but not inexpensive.

Oh well...

It seems my car is a total oddball (not just the driver ) - base All4 with ECD uses different springs thananything aftermarket & even requires a special order at the dealer. They think there's a set available in the US, but aren't 100% sure. ECD in a base model is something they said they've never seen. There was silence when I pointed out that they sold the car new - but I guess the parts guy wasn't working there in 2017.

Thank you all for your replies - but it seems I'm stuck with dealer only. Happy New Year!

So... the springs for the EDC/DDC cars with your model are VIN specific like all MINI springs. This is not just a MINI clubman thing or Base All4 thing. You take the VIN, put it in a calculator at the MINI dealer (i have that calc also) and then its spits out the part numbers. That's why its hard to catalog factory springs for any MINI or BMW. Most places says fits, but with Genuine and Genuine spec aftermarket its VIN specific. This is based of the weight of your car and options to determine the spring part number.

EDC and DDC cars have struts pre 2022 that have wires in the strut and match a spring. The spring itself.

Some people use the NON EDC/DDC lowering springs and put them on the EDC/DDC car and then use cancellers to fix any internal suspension fault. KW makes them for their systems https://www.ecstuning.com/b-kw-suspe...e/68510477~kw/

https://www.minif56.com/threads/lowe...dampers.58594/

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...c-damping.html

The EDC/DDC struts also have a larger PIN size, its like M12 or M14 VS M10 hence the EDC/DDC mounts VS NON EDC/DDC mounts.

Hope that makes sense and explains it all.

Thank you for that detailed response! It is classic/BMW/Mini overthinking IMO, but having owned many different German cars, I'm familiar with it. I also have a Fiat Spider, so I'm familiar with underthinking as well . Headlight wiring run from the battery to the fusebox, to the switch, to the dimmer switch, then to he headlight - resulting in ~11 volts at the bulb. A $5 relay & a bit of wire doubles the light output!

Anyway, I like this car and much about it, but it's not my dream Mini: 1) the 1.5 motor & 2) it's automatic. I will say it was relatively inexpensive & a decent car - but not one I feel like putting $1,200 worth (incl. $400 for the canceler) of springs & shocks into. $500 for stock ones is bad enough.

Once again - my thanks.

Thank you! I've already ordered them through the dealer though. I get a discount from them so that helps.

Happy New Year to you as well.
