I have a 2005 MCS w/15% pulley, and I have slight grinding sound from the supercharger (140k) Last topped-off 80K. It might be the bearings? Does anyone know a good shop for a rebuild, as I hear alot of complaints about different shops. Should I bite the bullet and get a new supercharger ($4K+). Anyone who has actual experience with the supercharger rebuild/replacement info would be appreciated.
For whatever it's worth, I got a rebuilt unit from Detroit Tuned earlier this year. My mechanic did the swap and the supercharger seized during his first test drive. DT sent out another unit and it has been fine for the couple thousand miles I've put on it so far. I believe Way also offers rebuilt superchargers, although they're not listed on his website.
I went with steigemeyer because they offer a port job. They also use hydro blasting which makes a like new finish. I thought seriously about Detroit tuned and Chad is great. Nothing but good reviews from Detroit.
Also, steigemeyer does a pulley grip mod that supposedly eliminates slip. It's an interesting idea of you want to ensure max boost.
I sent my 02 supercharger to Jon Bond Performance in Iowa in 2023. They were busy at the time so took about 4 - 5 weeks for the rebuilt unit to be returned but they replaced all bearings and gears inspected the unit and I've been driving the car for a little 4000 miles now with no troubles. I did not opt for an under drive pulley or have them do any porting due to over 100,000 miles on the engine but seems to be running very well for a 23+ year old car. I thought their charge for service was fair, based on options available. just under $1500 plus shipping. not sure what current charge might be. They also returned all replaced parts with the rebuilt unit. I would certainly consider them again. Hope someone else can benefit from my experience!

That happened to me with the second to last supercharger I had from Detroit Tuned. I was less than 5 miles into the road test and it locked up, which consequently locked up my engine and I had to coast off the road and get towed back to the shop. Chad at Detroit Tuned was fantastic with honoring their 24 month/unlimited mile warranty but I just could not deal with frequent supercharger replacements. DT has treated me well, but supercharger rebuilding is not their strength.
I have since installed a ported Stiegemeier supercharger about 14 months ago and it has been flawless and silent running in daily driving and 2 trackdays (next one is next weekend). Stiegemeier definitely knows what they are doing with supercharger rebuilds.

I spoke too soon... Another Detroit Tuned supercharger failed on me with less than 3K miles. My faith in any rebuilds is low at this point and the shop wants to put a new one on for $4500. I'm debating taking a chance and buying a local used unit for less than $500, with a reported 130K miles and rotors that look to be in great shape. With an oil service, maybe it'll buy me some time until there is a better option. What do you think: pay the BMW premium, gamble, or go for a TVS900?

I cannot recommend Stiegemeier enough. I am thoroughly pleased with his work. My ported supercharger from him, with the grip texture on the pulley cost me less than $2000. I’m thinking it was around $1800.
Without the porting and textured pulley, it would be less.

I am just a satisfied customer. Bob Stiegemeier did not ask me to talk him up and I have no affiliation with his business. His work speaks for itself.

^^^That sounds fantastic = $1,800 +/- , Rebuilt, ported at a 1 week turn-around.
notwithstanding:
@ 122k original miles, w/ 2wo service intervals; I feel very fortunate to have mine preforming as well as it has.
Kind of a fluke - About a year ago, while at a salvage yard I decided to pull and purchase a supercharger off a '05 R52 for $90.
The car itself looked well cared for so there was no telling why it was junked. It was my intention of taking apart and refurbishing the supercharger for a backup incase mine should ever fail. Upon going through the supercharger, checking the gears, seals, fluid color/ level, rotors, backlash and end-play - As dumb luck would have it; I had scored big time - The previous super charger had been recently replaced with this OEM factory unit I'd pulled off that salvage R52.
Talk about dumb luck?
