New sound...

Hi,

I have been hearing a new sound from my 2005 MCS, anyone hear something like this:

Happens when it's hot out (more then 85), the sound is like a low humming coming from the engine bay and it's pitch follows the engine speed. it's not the SC whine, I know how that sounds. If I rev up it gets so loud that I dont even hear the SC whine anymore. it's much deeper and lower frequency then the normal SC sound. I'm kind of scared my SC is dying... bearings maybe?

any ideas???

Thanks

Could be something our of balance. If you're still under warranty, off to the dealer.

yeah, it's still under warranty, but it's the classic case of "could not replicate". it's not that hot often here, so it's hard for them to hear it.

The thing is, I was planning to install a pulley this week, and i'm scared the sound will get worst and they will blame it on the pulley.

Ohh yeah. Definitly hold off on the pulley until you get it fixed. They can and will blame it on the pulley if they can.

Exact same problem here

I started noticing it a few weeks ago (also during a period of high temps) but it has persisted thru a recent cool front. I'm going in to the dealer tomorrow... I'll post back if they find anything noteworthy.

I thought it was the SC too but it seems to happen even in neutral (while coasting above 40mph) and theoretically the SC isn't spinning while in neutral (right?). So maybe it is a balance issue...

The SC is always on. Your tranny is in neutral, not your engine. If the engine is turning over, the SC is turning over.

The noise is prob. due to you using the AC. I think it's the compressor working, but it's def due the AC

nope, the first time it happened I had all the windows down and sunroof open with the auto climate control turned off.

it sounds more mechanical then an AC compressor...

Diagnosis

This morning I took a long drive in the Mini to the dealer and noticed that my droning sound was speed-sensitive and very noticeable at speeds above 30mph. It was not engine speed-sensitive and it was not caused by the AC compressor.

I'm at the Mini dealer now. They said the sound was a bad wheel bearing which is now fixed under warranty (I didn't suspect the wheel bearing because a bad Jetta wheel bearing a few years ago was a much higher-pitched noise).

British Kompressor, sorry if I hijacked your thread and this doesn't help you!!!
