Oil Filter Housing non return valve O ring

I just did an oil change on a 2009 (It's actually an R55) and found a split o ring smaller than a dime in the filter housing.

I found a Mini Tech bulletin (attached) that said the o ring would have come from the non return valve and the only fix is to replace the oil filter housing.

I have an R56 donor car. Can I remove the whole non return valve assembly from the R56 and transplant? If so, is there a trick to removing it?

Alternatively, can I just replace the O Ring? If so, any advice on how. Do you happen to know the size of the O ring?

Thanks!!

Dont know the size of that o-ring, we have the full housings in the aftermarket. If you have an oil leak at the block/filter location, i would just to the whole thing.

If not you can take down the o ring and match it up with another one local, get a hair smaller maybe so it holds.

There's no leak.

Any advice on how to replace the o-ring?

Does anyone have an oil filter housing out of the car such that they could check how to remove the anti return valve and/or the O-ring?

It would be a great help!

Mike,THANKS! That would be a lifesaver!

I'd love to know if it's possible to slip a new O-Ring on or remove the assembly and transplant it from my donor car.

Can I trouble you to send a photo of the assembly when it's out? Posted here or to my email: Lipofskyphoto@gmail.com

Ok, look at both the N14 and N18 oil filter housing, Its pressed in from back. Unless you unpress the flow back section, i dont see it coming out without breaking, hence why MINI says to fully replace.

Sorry i could not help.

Thanks for taking the trouble to check! That's a great help knowing that I can't remove the whole assembly.

I talked to a Mini service dealer and he says that I should be able to slip a new O-Ring on.

Thanks. The O-ring is located in the inside part of the housing where the filter sits.

Do you have a photo of the valve seen from the inside of the housing where the filter sits?

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the time you put into this!

The mini service guy seem to think that I can do it, but also said that the loss of the o-ring shouldn't be a critical problem for the car.

He's going to get back to me with the dimensions of the Ring.

Your explanation of the press fit from behind explains why I can't get the assembly separately or see a full picture of the assembly.

What's the consequence if that o-ring slips out? That's the non-return valve, apparently. Is it the return from the block or the return to the sump?

I'm guessing your filter would drain when sitting, causing low oil pressure at initial startup, right?

I think that you're exactly right.

You would be pumping a little bit of Air instead of oil through the system at startup.

I think over time, this could produce a little extra engine wear.

Changing that filter housing is a bit of a monster and you usually have to put the car into service mode.

I'm going to hope that I can get that o-ring on.

Yep low pressure warning, people have companied about that before and it was a broken return valve system.

Yes, the service guy said that was a possibility, but not necessarily going to certainly happen

Problem solved!

I used a Danco #48 O-ring (cost 99 cents)

I carefully worked the O-ring over the spring of the non-return valve until it sat under the spring.

I then carefully seated the O-ring into the round groove at the bottom of the spring using a small screwdriver.

I ran the car and checked the filter housing. The housing retained oil as it should as opposed to being empty of oil before the repair.
