R56 MCS oil filter housing drain back valve

Hi has anyone had this valve/plunger disassembled on the 2007 turbo n14? I have a persistent low oil pressure light with guage tested low pressure at idle. After some serious looking at the filter housing I think that the drain back valve isn’t sealing. How does it seal. Is there an O-ring at the bottom? I can’t feel anything when I push it down with my finger like it’s hitting an O-ring. Plus it pushes down farther than the base of the filter would when installed so I don’t understand how this can be sealing the oil pressure in it just feels hard at the bottom like there’s no sealing oring of any sort and I can’t find a picture breakdown of it anywhere. I see lots of information on the first generation minis about this breaking, but I can’t find anything on this year. Thanks in advance for anyone who’s had one a part and can shed some light on this.

Pretty sure the only purpose of that valve is to hold oil in the filter when the engine shuts down. Then, release that oil when the filter cap is removed.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what I think is its purpose but I’m trying to figure out how it does it. What does the sealing. When I push it down it doesn’t feel like it’s sealing against anything. Does someone have an old one laying around that they can look inside and see how it works?

Your low pressure issue is probably a worn or damaged pump. My '07 MINI (justa) (same pump), oil pump died at 125K miles while driving 70 mph on I-10. Fortunately, I immediately pulled over and shut off the engine when I saw the low pressure warning light. The pump is a gear type pump, and one of the gear teeth sheered in half; the broken piece jammed up the pump and the sprocket bolt sheered in half. On my most recent restoration project, an '09 justa, I rebuilt the entire engine, and replaced the pump. I disassembled the old pump just for fun, and there was some serious damage to the internal components caused by foreign objects (I suspect timing chain guide bits).

Parts Geek has the best price on the OEM pump, but you know how quickly pricing are changing in today's market. The markings on the Parts Geek OEM brand pump were identical to the factory pump I removed from the engine.

I just changed the oil in a base R55 and found an O-ring in the bottom of the oil filter housing.

After some research, it appears that it came from the drain back valve. Other people have had this problem.

it's possible that you have lost your O-ring as well.

Did you find a solution to your problem?

You did not say how many miles on the mini?
oil filter housings leak or more likely to leak if it is a turbo mini!
as oil filter housing is just below turbo source of heat.
as you can see the seal is a rubber insert.
mine was quite a mess & yes bit of work to get to but you can do it.

There's only 44,000 miles on a 2009 r55.

We may not be talking about the same seal.

I'm talking about an o-ring smaller than a dime that goes on the anti leakback valve inside the oil filter housing.

Is that the o-ring that you replaced? If so, can you remember as much detail as possible about how you did it and the way it fit?

Thanks!

There is no leak from the oil filter housing.
