R56 Looking to replace clutch for track day use. Single or Dual?
Looking to replace clutch for track day use. Single or Dual?
Hello all.
2009 JCW with 67k miles
Clutch is starting to slip under heavy throttle 3k rpm and up. Time to address the issue soon and I’m also changing the role of this car from daily driver to dedicated track car for HPDE. Power output is near factory- just some minor mods.
Been reading several threads about clutch/flywheel replacement.
Been reading about the OS Giken Single Plate kit as well as the Clutchmaster Stage 1 Single kit.
Questions
1: Any recommendations one single plate kit over the other? Chatter? Vibrations?
2: Should I simply have the OEM dual mass flywheel configuration replaced with OEM since I love the way this transmission drives/shifts?
Anyone have any experience/feedback?
Much appreciated.

My suggestion would be a Clutchmasters FX100 kit with an aluminum flywheel. The FX100 clutch disc allows enough slip for street driving, but will also grab when you want it to. If you're at OEM power levels, you will not have a need for more holding power. My N18 with stage 2 power levels has had an FX100 kit with steel flywheel for quite some time, and it never slipped when I didn't want it to. And, my wife can get in the car and drive it without stalling.

Their steel flywheel is the same weight as the OEM dual mass. If you'll be mostly hitting the track, I would go with the lighter aluminum flywheel. The aluminum flywheel will make throttle response much better.
steel good fit for daily driving and spirited canyon curves?? Need to replace worn out OEM @ 91k miles
Yes, the steel flywheel would be a good fit for a daily with weekend spirited driving. Also, the FX100 clutch kit would fit that use as well. On a stock car, I would be very happy with this combination. Even for my Stage 2 tune, it fits my daily use very well, too.

i ended up going with the Detroit Tuned stock replacement clutch and flywheel kit. Compared to the worn clutch this stock replacement kit almost grabs like a race clutch. Pedal actuation is still is light like a street pedal but the mechanical engagement is firm! Had to get used to the new- much earlier engagement point.
Really happy with the result.
