93C5 - OC3 Passenger Seat Occupancy Mat Replacement
I need some help. I’m working on my daughter’s 2013 R56 that had intermittent airbag light/warning that soon turned into a constant. After checking codes, I got a 93c3 code indicating that we had a faulty OC3 Passenger Seat Occupancy Mat. Unfortunately, this Mini is outside of the service bulletin warranty extension for replacement. I confirmed this with a local mechanic and was given a quote of close to $1400 to replace it. I was floored with the cost and needing to save money, I replace the mat/cushion myself (https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-5...eat-upholster/), which saved me about $1000. Installation went smooth, but now I get a new code 93c5;
I’m using an XTool A30M for diagnosis, but it’s not able to clear the code or initialize/register the new replaced part. The XTool airbag repair fix tool doesn’t seem to work on the Mini either. Is anyone familiar with this? I’ve read on another forum post where this part is supposed to be plug-and-play, but apparently there is some sort of registration that needs to take place. Several BMW owners report needing to go to the dealership to register/initialize the new part??? Anyone have experience with what I need to do next? Here is a snapshot of the Live Data for this
If a replacement seat occupancy detector requires coding, you may need to upgrade your scan tool.
That’s what I’m trying to figure out, whether coding is needed or if I have some other problem, like a bad part or other issue. There’s not a lot of info on 93c5 code for Mini. It’s a common problem that a Mini mechanic would have run into, so hoping one will read this and advise.
You’ve only reiterated what I’ve already deduced in my original post. You’re not helping at all. If you’ve never done this and don’t know the answer to my question, please move on. Looking for responses from someone who has actual experience working on the OC3 mat on a gen 2 mini. None of what you’ve pasted here is specific to that.
I first want to say, Maybe, maybe not has answered a lot of questions here. Being nasty in a reply isn't going to help your cause, as a matter of fact, it will most likely exclude people from replying to your post.
"Replaced the seat cushion and cover. It wasn’t that hard dealing with the hog rings. I have a new error code 93C5. In googling it seems I need to recode the airbag module. "
I would take it to the dealer and have it recoded. I dont think some of those aftermarket tools can recode that since its a safety thing.

Thanks! The 93C5 code seems to be the result of removing the seat (unplugging the harness) without first disconnecting the battery. This seems to explain why some had no issues replacing their mats and others having a code they can't clear. I'll look around for a mechanic or dealership that can clear this up for me.
PS - Hey @Maybe, maybe not! I apologize for being rude and snippy with you. I know you were just trying to be helpful and I see that you help a lot of folks on the forum. I was having a rough time with this and I shouldn't have snapped like that. So, thanks for the assist and please accept my apology.
@DogfaceSGM - You are correct sir. My apologies. BTW, were you a SGM in 3ID per chance. I served 3ID from 92-95 in Schweinfurt Germany.
I am currently a CSM in the Army Reserve. My active duty time was long ago from 1983-1986, 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels". I retire this coming January, age 60. Main reason I have stayed in this long is as a member of the Reserve or National Guard you can get what is called TriCare Reserve Select health insurance. I was self-employed from 1997-2012 so it saved me a boat load of cash. Since 2012 I signed on salary + commission with the company that I was an independent repping. They started dealerships in some states and wanted me to assist them and still have my territory. It is a family owned business so I still pay less and get better coverage with it.
