Bought R56 7/2020 from a foreign car shop that received it with a blown motor. He said he replaced it with the same model year engine (N18) with a few less miles on it. I've driven 25,000 miles since.
According to the vin, the car was manufactured in 6/2012 (post HPFP change). Is there any way to tell if the engine is pre 3/2012 build thus having the more troublesome pump?
Reason I'm seeking the info: car won't stay running. Will fire a couple turns but immediately dies. I've changed fuel filter and checked the tank pumps relay. Going to check low pressure side this weekend.

Initially stalled about 60 miles from home. After waiting a few minutes, it started and drove home fine.
Next day, drove to work and back, about 25 miles, without issue.
That weekend, I drove to church, the pool hall and home without issue.
That evening, it stalled heading to the store. Again, after a few minutes, it started and ran fine.
Finally, it stalled on the way home and hasn't started since.
Really, there would be no way the HPFPs would be interchangeable. The controls are completely different. If they plugged in an older style pump into a newer style controls, it wouldn’t run.
That being said, you can tell just by looking at the pump which model you have.
