Malfunctioning High Pressure Fuel Pump - R58S (N18)

Longtime lurker, putting my experience in for a failing HPFP on a '12 R58S. Hoping that my experience helps someone else on the board.

Started out with rough cold starts, with RPMs fluctuating wildly. As the problem got worse, it was throwing codes for multiple misfires and low fuel rail pressure. After some time, it would actually put the car into limp mode after a cold start. Attempting to drive it spiritedly would cause more misfires and loss of power.

High Fuel pressure values also fluctuated pretty wildly around the setpoint value (using the Schwaben scan tool). Like with so many people on here, I believed the culprit was the HPFP, seeing how there was a technical service bulletin posted for the part (check your car's manufacture date if it was made in 2012 and prior years)

I took the car to the dealer and had them diagnose it, and what would you know, it was the HPFP. Since the car was 100,000/120,000 miles, it was replaced for free, including the "inspection" cost.

Hope this helps.
Mike

My 2012 is sputtering and shutting off on the initial starts. It seems once it's primed it's fine and will start right up. My dealer says it's not covered though for my 2012 JCW R58.

The cutover from the old Continental HPFP (that failed a lot) to the new Bosch version (which has been very reliable) was 3/2012, go to realoem.com and enter your VIN to be sure which one you have. I'm so glad that my car was built in 4/2012...
