Stiff Brake at Idle RPM (When Hot) and Oil Film on Valve Cover
Stiff Brake at Idle RPM (When Hot) and Oil Film on Valve Cover
Hi!
I have a 2010 R55 with an auto, N14 engine, and roughly 81,550 on the clock. I suppose I’ll jump right into it:
1) I just rebuilt the vacuum pump with new seals. Now at idle when the engine is nice and hot, the brake pedal gets super stiff. It goes back to normal with even just a rev to 1K. I’m getting suction at the connection for the brake vacuum hose, but I don’t have a gauge to measure how much. Could the hose just be toast? Edit: forgot to mention the exhaust smells super weird when this happens.
2) I replaced the valve cover and the gasket. I’m still getting oil film all over the top of the valve cover and out the hose that goes to the intake boots. I had to replace the other PCV hose in the back that goes to the manifold with some rubber fuel line since the original plastic one disintegrated. The rubber one has a sharp bend in it. Could this be clogging up the PCV system a bit and allowing oil to spray all over the engine? There is some oil in the intake boot. What am I missing?
Thank you for any insight! Car runs and drives fine but just drinks lots of oil. Something I expected but I’m just trying to manage what I can.
Thanks again!

the oil leak on the valve cover could be due to a bad cover right off the box or the brand!
if the car burns oil, it's time to check/replace the valve stem seals if the pcv isn't the culprit.
There was so much play in the impeller that I wouldn’t be surprised that I basically Tim Taylor'd it by rebuilding it. The check valve may also be stuck, so I can try that, too.
I’ll see about getting an exchange on the valve cover. However, am I able to just replace the diaphragm?
I am getting a puff of oil smoke when pulling away after idling for more than two minutes, so I know the valve guides are worn.
Thank you for your reply!
