I think the Chrono package had a real temp gauge, otherwise just a warning lamp.
Chrono package was a cluster of instruments in the center of the dash and the Speedo was mounted above the steering wheel next to the Tac.
The Chrono Pack oil temp and oil pressure gauges are displaying computer estimated values.
nyckid - if you can find one there is an OEM accessory oil temp gauge with direct sensor. I had one (and sold my spare). It mounts in the lower center console behind the cup holders.
well that sucks
has anyone installed a regular aftermarket temp gauge? if so what is the diy?
I'm in the process of doing that. My car has satnav, so no gauge from factory in mine either.
I have the gauge pod that goes in the lower center console, like in JackMac's pic, and I've put Innovate MTX-D water temp/battery voltage gauge in there (another MTX-D with oil temp & pressure is in the other slot). The sensor I'm putting in the hose going from thermostat towards the heater matrix, just need to find a hose adapter of the right size. Some put the sensor on the top radiator hose, but that'll show the temps only when the 'stat is open, so it's not deal.

Yup, they use clever algorithms and calculate values for the gauges based on water temp, revs, load% vs. time etc. But fake nonetheless. Also the factory water temp gauge is buffered, so that the needle stays smack in the middle even though the actual water temp fluctuates in normal driving.
Just get a scangauge. It plugs into the OBD port and you can mount it anywhere you want. I run one in each of my MINIs as it gives me temp down to the degree so you can actually watch the entire cooling system cycle and know if there is an issue what it is. https://www.waymotorworks.com/scangauge-ii.html
I've used OBD2 based solutions in the past, but it's a bit of a hassle, especially as I use OBD2 also for logging (at track days and for tuning). Of course Scangauge readings would be better than putting the sensor in the top radiator hose, but that was never my plan.
