Carpet removal for sound dampening?

Is removing the carpet for adding sound deadening relatively easy? Is it as simple as removing the seats and popping out the plastic trim on the sides? I would think the carpet doesn't need to come out completely but just enough so I can add some dampening material. Also for anyone who has done this before, were the results worth the pain? Or was it negligible?

Did it to my R53 but kind of a PITA. The center console must be removed along with the dash downtubes, etc. Behind the front seats, under the rear seat and the trunk area is relatively easy. The carpet in front of the seats already has approx. 3 inches of foam underneath it. Adding sound deadener to the firewall is not possible unless you completely remove the carpet. I will say that the deadener substantially reduces interior noise, especially if you also do the insides of the doors and the panels to the sides of the rear seat both of which can also be tricky.

Are you thinking I'm better off just doing the insides of the doors and under and on the sides of the rear seats? I don't really want to do it if it's a huge pain, besides I'm not sure how much of a benefit I'll have because mine is a conv.

Someone else with an R52 who's done this can weigh in but I'm thinking the sound deadening wouldn't do that much for a convertible since a lot of the exterior noise comes via the roof.

If you keep that ugly black canvas thingie tucked back out of the way, interior sounds disappear...except what you let out thru the speakers...or your co-pilot whining about being too hot or cold. No real help that, but drop heads of any marque for many years are notorious for being a bit more noisy than hard tops.

I would do the doors first and see what that does. Mine have a fairly "tinny" sound when closing. That may do just enough.
