1.8 Stroker

Hi,

Im looking to upgrade my engine in the following year or so and i was looking at RMW 1.8L stroker and i have a couple of questions....i know im annoying
RMW is not replying or anwsering phones now its maybe because of covid or bad customer support... so thats why im here

I would really like to have a reliable car so that said i would rather loose a couple of hp that have a blown motor. (already blown one) .. i guess im asking how is the reliability on these stroker kits?

when i will opt for upgrades i will also get a BVH to match and was thinking of a RMW again, does anybody have one that could give me some pointers or maybe so other brands?

and finally, is the stroker actually worth it since i dont know the price... is the good 'ol forged piston and rods and BVH a better choice?

I really appriciate anybody who replies and helps thank you

Personally, I'd just stick with stock, simply upgrade Pistons and Rods, then balance.
Any potential HP gains from the stroker are really only of use if you're racing or looking for a dyno queen. Any big power upgrades to the stock or mildly bored block with good Pistons and esp Rods, will put you in the "losing traction" category on a street car, with all the other supporting mods. No need to spend the extra cash.

Plus if something should go wrong down the road, an additional rebuild will cost you'll less again.

I have an RMW stroker. I use it in a high hp turbo build. It’s technically a street car but not really much of a daily driver as it does not have AC. The motor is basically bulletproof so you don’t really have to worry about durability but I would not recommend one unless you’re looking to make 300+ whp on e85 with a TVS or if you’re looking for make 500+ whp with a turbo.

In other words, the RMW head and short block are the best hands down, but they are not cheap.

Jan is recovering from a sports medicine surgery currently, so don’t be offended if he’s hard to reach. I haven’t heard much from him either.

Feel free to message me with any questions.

You can get to 250hp with standard mods (headers, exhaust, head, injectors, tune) fairly easily, but maybe expensively. More power than that will require quite a few more mods (read even more expensive) to make it manageable (LSD, suspension, etc.). Also, I would like to understand from owners of a 1.8 stroker if they're concerned about an overbore due to the tight water jackets on this engine, and what kind of HP increases they're seeing from just the bored block and oversized pistons.

The motors are sleeved. The RMW turbo thread has some photos of one of the blocks. Boring without sleeving these blocks, the water jackets can be compromised or the wall may not have enough material left.

The 1.8 is capable of big numbers, when turbo converted. But, that gets expensive.

It seems to be hard to get the 1.8 Ltr block without bore and sleeve. Stroking the crankshaft is a good way to add CC's with out going huge bore. If you want the larger CC's then overbore and sleeve is less than the cost of the stroked crankshaft. Seems that a 1.76 Ltr bored and sleeved engine with 81 mm Pistons is out there. The Sleeves are safe and allow what ever boost you want ! Blower or Turbo . However the cost , although LESS than the Stroked 1.8 , is still there for the 81 mm forged piston set up.

AND...if you don't do some careful cylinder head work and fuel flow modifications...to match the new cubic inches you aren't going to get the most out of the engines new displacement.

this is so true, with my mods I'm already at now worrying about getting better traction. No use in power you cant put down AND I DO have an lsd but stock suspension , few upgraded stiffening bars and new but cheap 205/15 tires that are by far my cars weak point.

Do you have a build thread. I’d love to see your build. I’m also wanting the 1.8 and the TVS. I’m addicted to the sc winding. I’ve got 113k on my stock m45. I’ve serviced it and it seems to keep on going, but I’ve come to the point that I want to seriously consider stepping up the power. Why E85 over 91?
