New to The mini world but here are the details. I picked up a 2006 MCS with an engine showing poor compression on 4 cylinders. All between 90-120. I’m pulling the head tomorrow but with 200km it’s likely due for a refresh. I found a nice deal on an 06 JCW engine. It’s marginally more expensive than a used S engine with same KMs. Is this a straight swap relatively speaking? Would I need the supercharger from the JCW and a ECU tune? Anything else? Any help or direction appreciated guys. Thanks

 

Intercooler is different from MCS to JCW.Supercharger is same for 2006 year.You need ECU tune because JCW have 380cc injectors and your MCS have 320cc injectors.But if you buy only engine without attachments(mean without injectors) and intend to keep your original injectors, no need a ECU tune.

You should be able to find the listing of the JCW engine upgrade easy enough, that can guide you. If you really want to go wild, Find a GP engine or Retro-Fit package to upgrade to.

You can use this as an example to build your own.

No it's not.
They're 330cc in the MCS.

 

To add to the above, only the color of the intercooler cover/diverter is different, black on an S and silver with JCW badging on a JCW.

Also, the only differences between a factory or upgrade JCW 210hp engine and a GP is the bigger GP intercooler and ECU tune to 214hp. Since pricing has gone through the roof, a GP intercooler and cover/diverter can cost as much or more than a used engine now.

If the 2006 JCW engine is coming as a package with a trans, I'd bite. That 2006 JCW trans has a limited slip and the 2006 JCW engine has some other upgrades you can read about in the link posted above.

 

For the JCW longblock vs the standard longblock the only difference is the porting on the exh side of the head. So if you are just doing a long block swap you can do it no problem and it will make more power. You won't need anything else to make it work correctly. You can move forward and do more like injectors, pulley, and tune, but not needed to make it run and work it would be just to make more power.
