R56 Replacing Coil packs: Scheduled Maintenance or Failure?
Replacing Coil packs: Scheduled Maintenance or Failure?
I'm at 64,000 miles on a 2011.
I'm replacing the spark plugs. Should I be replacing the coils as well at this mileage?
I'm used to replacing spark plug wires and old ignition components (points, coil) at around the 50K mark which can start to leak and generally get replaced. Now, with modern platinum spark plug life is safely 60,000 and some iridium spark plugs can last 100,000 miles. Do you just replace the coil packs when they fail as opposed to getting any advantage of replacing them for preventive maintenance advantages.
I would like someone to tell me I'm not wasting a much of money on coil packs....?

I don't have an answer on lifetime yet but I probably will depending on how it goes after the spark plugs are changed. (Cyl 4 misfire at 52K)
I would replace them when you feel like it. They are easy to access so its not a time commitment, just money. I'd also do it if you were to get performance upgrades, making sure its its tip top stock would be better than a modded mess.

that's hard to say as I've replaced many sets of coils so if the budget allows I can't say it would be a bad idea. But I only recommend using the original MINI coils as we have had issues with aftermarket and they also haven't put out as much voltage as the original MINI ones do.
