Oil pressure light.

2006 MCS R52. My light comes on when engine is hot and at idle. When I rev up, it goes out.Dipstick showed oil level in the lower range of normal. I added about half a quart... no change.
My understanding is that there's a good chance it's either the oil pressure sensor or the drainback valve. I have one of those pick and pull type scrap yards not too far from my place so I figured I would at least harvest these two parts before digging into my own car. I was able to pull off the sensor very easily. I fiddled with the drainback valve and I couldn't seem to remove it (didn't want to break it either) Do I need to remove the entire oil filter housing to remove the drainback valve, or can I pull it off while it's still on the car? What's the trick to removing it?

I would do a synthetic oil & filter change first - maybe use a heavier grade of oil. 0/20 > 5/30 > 10/40
& see what results you get.
Then get a real pressure test at a garage which will tell you if you've got a real problem or not.

So I swapped out the oil pressure sensor since it was cheap and simple enough, no dice (hey at least I acquired a new skill) Then, as per MVPeters, I changed the oil and filter. That seemed to do the trick. You're the man !!! Took it out this morning for a 20 minute run close to home and no light. I still used 5w30 like I always do (this time I picked up some penzoil euro version since it was on sale). I guess it must have been the oil filter. I remember Rockauto sending me some off branded one that I probably should have sent back instead of installing. I don't remember the brand but it was heavy duty or something so I thought it was better (lesson learned)
I hope I didn't do any damage to the engine the few times I drove the car to test it out with the oil light on.

MANY folks I respect in the MINI world recommend MINI oil filters

I've also had good luck with MANN for folks who bring their cars to me with parts . . .

there are MANY reports of problems with others

I use MINI only . . .

FYI; the MINI-branded filter is really a Mahle OX175D...

Two other filters that are excellent choices are...

1) MANN HU 816/2 x
2) Hengst E31H D93
