Generic replacement thermostat?

I need to replace my thermostat. Generic T-stats seem to sell for around $50; the oem part is around $130. Given the poor reliability of the oem T-stat, is there any good reason to buy oem? Recommendations for an aftermarket replacement?

I've gone through 2 OEM stats (the original and one from the BMW dealership), and one Gates stat. The Gates stat lasted less than 1 year, but I got a warranty replacement from Rock Auto. So far, the 2d Gates stat is working well.

If I ever have to buy another one, I'll get it from FCPEuro since they have a lifetime warranty.

I see a Gates thermostat (#34713) with a lifetime warranty available but it says an oe adapter is required. What's the adapter?

I would recommend going with an original MINI one as I've had several aftermarket ones fail lately. And MINI will do the labor on the original one if it fails as that is their policy.

Another vote for OEM. I've seen several threads here recently with stories of using a non-OEM thermostat housing that didn't work properly. Then an OEM part fixed the problem. You don't want to have to go through the procedure multiple times over a few dollars.

On the N18 newer thermostat its Behr now, on the older one it used to be Behr or Facet for a short time. Mark IV industries, aka dayco/dayco Europe is for the earlier engine. Last time i talked to them they were not selling into aftersales. They have OEM contracts they dictate that for some time. Much like when I met with Mecaplast for valve covers as Ebay fake Genuine Mecaplast valve covers were showing up all over the place with there logo. Mecaplast does not sell into the aftermarket on that cover. just genuine MINI.
