Getting my MCS with N14 engine to pop

I have a 2008 MCS with a manual transmission. Last night I just installed a catless down pipe. My exhaust also consists of the second cat deleted, the resonator deleted and the rear muffler replaced with a single to dial tip straight through muffler. It also has a K&N typhoon intake. I do not have any sort of tune on the car. While deleting the cats definely made it sounds cooler, I’m after pops and gurgles. With the current setup, I haven’t heard any at all.

What else could i possibly do to make this thing sound like I want..?

You can get a stage 2 manic tune with the pops enabled to bring back some serious popping. Probably the easiest way since the popping is coded into the ECU tuning.

Yes just get a Tune and there you have it. I have 2009 JCW with manic Stage II and she pops in non sport mode just a little but when you put her in sport mode the pops come alive.

I’ll have to look into a tune. I’m worried because the JCW minis sound great, but they also have bigger turbos and different internals. I don’t want to touch the inside of the engine, but maybe a turbo swap when mine goes bad. I’m kinda short on car funds, so a tune is probably unlikely for a while..

Plenty of people have done the manic stage 2 on an s with no issues, check out some of the threads in the Powertrain forum here for 2nd gen.

The Tune will give you the pops especially on the S model. Money well spent for enhancing the character of the Mini S.

For sure if you have us do a Stage 1 or 2 tune you will gain the pops and bangs.

I love the idea of tuning it! More power, pops and flames, etc.

The only downfall is that price tag. Plus it seems like I’ll have to send in my ECU so that means no car for a handful of days. I’ll just have to deal with it for now..! Hopefully in the future I can get this thing tuned to bring it to the next level!

The tune is really not that expensive for the return in performance. You already spent the money to put a catless downpipe in. Your not that far off the price of a tune. Anyway save your dineros and rent a car at the time when you get the tune. Your in california so you should be able to find a manic tuner in that state. You might be able to just drive to his/her location. Someone on the board please help thie OP with locating a mini tuner in California. You'll have to provide them with what area of California you are in so they can help you identify a local tuner.

This was supposed to be my reliable, cheaper, daily driver! Then all my extra money was supposed to go into my Miata. Now I just have two racecars and will need a new daily driver

I’m in Central / Southern California. Specifically Bakersfield. If a tuner that’s fairly local to me can chime in on details, that would be awesome!

So I’m looking into an Alta Accessport that is for sale. I have almost zero intentions of ever doing more engine work to this car. Possibly an intercooler down the road, but that would seriously be it. Would this be a good idea? It’s nice because I can switch the tunes to my liking by simply
plugging it in. While the manic tune definitely seems better, keep in mind my original goal was only to pop and shoot flames. Would this acessport be a good option for me? Not to mention it’d be cheaper than sending in my ECU and a lot less permanent. I also understand the acessport is no longer supported. But as stated above, I have no intentions of doing anything else to this engine. So I’m theory, everything thing I need has already been done and I would have maps for that?

I’m either overthinking it or underthinking it haha.. I’ve never
messed with computers in cars, so it’s a little nerve wracking.

So upon further research I've decided to purchase a second hand Alta Accessport. It's cheaper, does what I want, and is much more convenient. I'll continue to update this just in case anyone else is in my shoes and wants another resource to pop up while searching! Hopefully it turns out well!

I had the AccessPort for over a year before I went with Manic. One of the reasons I switched over was just to get the pops and bangs back. When I still had the accessport I emailed Alta in 2015 and asked if they ever came out with a map that brought the pops back, and he told me they could never get it right in house, so they never released them to the public. I see your located in Cali, if you haven't already bought the accessport, talk to MarioKart on here. He's located in Cali and if you're close enough to him you wont have to deal with taking your ECU out to ship it to someone.
Here's his review thread if you want to look through it. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ew-thread.html

Looks like you have wasted your money with regards to getting your bangs and pops.

I guess we’ll find out shortly! Worst case I just resell it.

It’s no longer officially supported, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used.
