one side vs two side

hey everyone, i was just wondering if their is any significant advantage over a one-side vs. two-side exhaust, and vise versa

the only positive that i can clearly see is the one-side exhaust system being lighter

thanks

Thats a good question. i would like to add another why doesnt anyone make a system that goes straight out w/no curves no nothing just straight.

Main reason is due to the location of the battery in the MCS. If I recall correctly, other posts have indicated no performance advantage, some have indicated increased restriction . Is lighter though:smile:

one sided vs 2 sided doesnt have much difference... with 1 sided you do lose weight, but thats about the performance difference.... with the one sided system, exhaust gas tends to want to exit at the path of least distance, so one tip in a dual tip system maybe more soot ridden then the other

as for a straight thru exhaust.. someone's done one, by taking the stock battery out and using a low-profile battery i believe.. but i dont remember if its here or mini2 that the person posted his exhaust

I have heard from pretty reliable sources that the MCS reponds better and was made for 2 ball exhausts.

One sided exhausts still are costly, offer about a 20+ pound weight loss from stock and about a 12 pound weight loss from double sided systems.

For a street driven car either will work fine but for the highly modded MINI the double sided exhaust allows for a little better performance (less restrictive).

Exhaust noise is more aggressive in double sided systems like the Magnaflow and Borla Race. Single sided systems can be a little raspy.

I've owned the Quicksilver single sided and Miltek double sided exhausts and prefer the Miltek. More power, less noise but higher cost and more weight.

The MCS Battery will need to be relocated to get a straight through exhaust pipe mounted- it's been done before. Lots of hassle.

I guess I feel that one needs to know, or at least have an idea as to how much they will want to up the performance (increase the output of the engine). A high flow exhaust like mine is not going to show much gain on a stock MCS, and will actually lose torque due to the lessend back-pressure.

With the visualization of the engine as an air pump, flow is essential, especially when more air is desired. After chatting with a few race guys, and fellow posters here and on MINI2, making the catback high flow is the way to go for high hp. That is why I went from 2.25 to 2.5", and that is why I elminated the flow-robbing bends that circumvent the battery box. I can always dial-in torque later, if needed, like at the cat, via the UNIChip, or other means. The reverse is not so easy...

It just depends what one desires for an endpoint as to what exhaust best suits those needs.
