NGK (1422) ILKR8E6 Spark Plug????? Really Confused!!!

Hey all... I went a bought a set of 4 NGK (!422) ILKR8E6 spark plugs based on what Manic Tunes told me and from reading up here on the forum.

Everywhere I'm reading that I need a thin-wall 14mm 12 pt spark plug socket to do the swap but the NGK (1422) ILKR8E6 spark plugs ARE not 14mm they are 16mm... so now I'm really confused!

So here's the question... am I going to need the thin-wall 14mm, 12pt socket to remove the factory plugs and then get a thin wall 16mm socket to install these new NGK spark plugs??? I think I have to be missing something here or not following directions or something... Can someone whose done this maybe shed some light on what's going on?

Thank you so much... Alex

The two plugs take different size thin-wall sockets. 1422's are the correct replacement as manic recommends --- one heat range colder. You'll like the added performance.

1422 is two steps colder than stock S engine and one step colder than JCW engine. it is for tuned cars (higher than JCW spec).

My '07 MCS came OEM with ILZKBR7A-8G aka stock # 5992. The heat range is designated as "7". Stock # 1442 or ILKR8E6 is heat range "8", or one range colder than my OEM. Can't comment on JCW --- I don't have one.

I've read that for every 75HP increase, one step colder heat range is recommended. However with a custom tune, regardless of HP increase, it's a good idea to follow your tuners suggestion.

You will need the thin wall 14mm for the stock plugs and a regular 5/8 inch spark plug socket for the new plugs.

Note that some 5/8 spark plug sockets are thicker than others. If it does not fit easily then try a different one. A cheap Stanley from Walmart work for me.

My '12 S came with beru brand plugs heat range 6. Probably for emissions and/or mpg, useless with anything higher than stock output. I put in 'JCW' spec plugs (heat range 7) for my manic stage 2 tune and that solved the random misses and complete boost loss. I can run up to map B until I change to 1422 plugs which are heat range 8. Still got ~25k miles on the plugs assuming change interval of 30k.

Can you be more specific about the car not liking the plugs.

And why not go with the plugs recommended by Manic?

Not trying to derail just hoping someone can confirm torque spec off top of their head ~10-14.5 ft lbs?

Replacing mine after about 40k miles on stage 2, still looked pretty good!

What did you gap them to? If the gap is too big you will have problems.

The Bentley manual has spark plug torque at 17 ft-lbs or 23 Nm.

FYI.m, a gap of 0.6 mm works really well.

My '07 MCS also ran fine with OEM plugs --- Stock #NGK5992. Even finer when re-gapped to about .020". They've been discontinued and replaced with Stock #NGK95770. Both of these plugs have the same gap spec --- 0.8mm (the last number in the part number, not the stock number). The stock #NGK1422, (part # ILKR8E6) wants a gap of 0.6mm.

I only switched to the 1422's on Manic's recommendation, but I did so BEFORE the Manic install. There was a noticeable improvement --- more so than just a new OEM plug. And this was while still pumping out 312 WHP!

And good luck finding a plug 2 ranges colder. I've read there is one, an NGK, but un-godly expensive and special order only --- used by some racing team. Take a week or two off and read thru this thread --- http://www.minitorque.com/forum/f272...47/#post447094 I'm pretty sure this is where I read about it. Maybe another brand has one? Be sure and verify all the specs are compatible if you find one.

hi thanks for reporting but that doesn't make any sense. what model/heat range are your stock plugs and what model/heat range are the plugs that gave you problems? what gap did you run them both at.?

I'm also getting similar issues after changing to these plugs. It was running pretty smooth with the the stock NGK plugs from BMW, but after changing to these iridium plugs the idle is rough, engine noisey (not sure if its knocking or miss firing), looks to be spitting out unburned fuel from the exhaust. I'm running the stage 3 from Manic on performance mode C (95ron but I put in 98).
I put the stock ones back in and its back to running smoothly again. Not sure the issue. I left the gap on plugs as they were, 0.020" I believe.

Try setting the NGK1422, (part # ILKR8E6) plug gap to 0.6mm. I think your 0.020" is a little too tight.

The iridium's are not the easiest plugs to gap without damaging. I guess I'll give it a go. The guys at Jmtcperformance.com also recommend a wider gap. I didn't think it was going to make much a difference though.
In response to the other reply, I don't believe "running meth" is a prerequisite to using these plugs with the tune.

No need to gap them, leave them at .6mm. Lowes sells the 12pt 14mm deep thin socket for $3.00

I've got the tools to required and have already installed them, but pulled them out again due to the issues. If I leave the gap "as-is" I've not changed anything and the problem will persist.
Is running race fuel or methanol really the only solution that the others experienced in here? It seems a bit drastic
