On a whim, I own a Mini again...

Hi all,

Ever go car shopping and can't get yourself to pull the trigger on a ton of "good" cars then suddenly (and out of character) you end up buying something unplanned?

Well that happened to me yesterday when I came across a 2013 JCW HT in Reef Blue (and almost every other possible option, even driving lights!) with only 9300 miles on the clock at a Lexus dealer of all places.

Something about the test drive and the way the car got under my skin sold me. This thing is a crazy monster of a machine! I needed a new car, and had recently test-driven NC and ND Miatas, GTIs, a MK1 TT, the F56 Cooper and Cooper S, a base R56 HT, the Fiesta ST, a 986 Boxster, 128i and even a last gen Camaro 2LT convertible.

What is it about this car???

My other car is a Monaco Blue E91 (328i wagon, with XDrive) and before this I thought it was quite sporting. It feels like a Lexus in comparison to this bonkers Mini.

I plan on bringing it to a Mini dealer to have them go through it properly to see if it needs anything, but I was wondering if anyone would recommend an extended warranty. It seems the JCW is a lot more stout than a regular Cooper S, but I had a bunch of warrantied issues with my '11 Countryman S (that I did not enjoy.)

Also, are there any St Louis JCW owners on here? I'm moving there in a month and would love to get the low down on great roads to enjoy!

Another Reef Blue owner! Welcome to the (rather small) club!

That's what hooked me - I love dark blue, and with the blue roof and blacked out lights it just looked the business. Otherwise it would've been a dark blue Fiesta ST in my driveway.

I grew up in the St. Louis area and always enjoyed the back roads in the Wildwood area. Not sure where you'll be in STL but, if you find yourself in West County, you can head west on Clarkson and find quite a few fun roads to tear down. Just watch for the county cops; they know those are fun roads too.

not a JCW owner, but I drive a '13 Base HT & live in St. Louis - the St. Louis Mini Club is fairly active and does a lot of rallies I believe, and I'm fairly involved with the SCCA in our region. the SCCA down here does road races, which the car would be a blast at, rallies, and most of all, autocrosses.

Where in Chi are you? I was there last weekend for an autox with the Chicago SCCA, and go up pretty frequently - including in a few weeks for a track day at the Autobahn in Joliet.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions

My 2 cents

I think what happens is the mini takes you back to the days of having fun while driving.

It's a quirky little car that's nicely made basically a front wheel drive BMW. The handling is a sharp turn in some body roll with steering feel that's decent for electric power steering.

In the world of fast cars it's irrelevant but in the city environment it's faster then most fast cars and is a blast to drive in traffic.
