How long will the steering stay unlocked?

I have an 07 MCS manual tranny I need to tow. When I insert the key fob, the steering unlocks.
My question is, with the key fob inserted, how long will it stay unlocked?
Or is there a way to unlock the steering without the key fob being in the slot?

Thanks for your feedback.

Richard

When you say 'tow', what kind of tow are you talking about? Across town to a shop for service or across country behind the bus?
If the former using a tow strap you need somebody behind the wheel. If cross country you need a cradle for the front member making your question moot.

I am towing 200 miles with tow bar. I am good with the 4 wheel down tow issue, I just don't want to get half way and the steering lock. Is there something I can do to prevent that or how long will it stay unlocked with the key fob in the slot.
Thanks
Richard

Early MINI in 2007 had the steering wheel lock system. With the fob inserted my stayed unlocked. But it will keep the ignition on.

I would tow on a flat bed or on a trailer without the wheels touching the ground. If you do two, two from the front wheel, ebrake off. And strap down the front wheels.

Thanks, just so I understand the whole picture of leaving the ignition on, besides running the battery down, are there other issues that may be ill advised that leaving the ignition on would damage or ruin?

It would just run the ignition ( engine off ) and drain the battery. I would tie down the wheels with straps and get a two wheel trailer. I would not tow it on all fours. I know you are not going far , and some people do this, but its can tear up the tires and runs the transmission without it being cooled from the engine, auto its worse as its not being cooled.

Or worse can lock up and take itself AND you into the ditch - or worse.
Here's what you need to remove all doubt.

PS: Just don't try to back up with it all hooked up unless you're really, really good at it.
