TPMS and Wheels

Hi all,

newbie to the forum here. Recently bought a used '07 R56 and it has 3 wheels with the metal valve stems and one with rubber. Of course, it has a low tire pressure warning. Can anyone tell me if the two wheels for the two different types of TPMS are the same? Or are they specific to the type of TPMS system in the car? Trying to determine if I need to buy a specific wheel for the in-wheel sensor.

thanks,

Chris

my 07 had the old style warning system that ran off the speed sensors for the ABS .... they changed to "active" sensors mid year . . .

first thing to try ... find the low tire and fill it up, then reset the tpms. It may be as simple as a tire being low a few pounds . . .

Yes, I had the older system also on my 07 R56. Later in 07/08 they switch to the inboard sensor system. Look at your production date on the door jam. Looks like you have a mismatch of wheels from different years. If you don't have the inboard TPMS can can run them and the speed sensor does the work. I have a wheel set on my 2005 MINI with inboard tpms for -9/2009 , they just set there , until I get new tire, then they will come off and be sold.

Thanks guys!
Good info. I've done the reset several times. Has no effect. But regardless of which kind it has, are the wheels themselves the same? Can I remove the rubber stem and replace it with steel and sensor setup?

Welcome.

Yes you can remove them, But I would first determine if you have the inboard sensors factory on your MINI or determined by your production date.

Trying to get the dealer to tell me what it came with when it was sold but they haven't been very helpful. The production date is Aug. '07. If I knew what it originally came with I could determine which way to go with it. Might have to break down and by a a scanner to read body module info.

You might have the older system. Being that in about 07/08 they switched.
They can tell in the original full build sheet most of the time. But they have to look that up in the system. Sometimes the Vin decoder does not show that.

Do you have metal or rubber stems? This is usually a give away as to which system you have.

Thanks everyone,
I apologize for the abandoned post. I wound up breaking down the tire and finding it didn't have a sensor because someone left it out! I decided to replace all four and the problem was solved. Also figured out you can tell if you have inboard sensors by the receivers mounted in the wheel wells.

Thanks again for the advice!

Pootie
