Drivetrain Flames

Flames
I have a 2009 Mini Cooper s turbo charged. I have a Alta cold air intake, Alta hot side boost tube, and a Alta turbo inlet tube stock exhaust and was wondering how can I shoot flames with my mini. Want a nice exhaust, loud, and shoots flames. And wondering how I would go about doing this. What exhaust and how to set up everything. Thanks

A straight pipe would be the easy solution. You definitely need to get rid of at least 2 of the catalytic converters in the exhaust, especially the one in the downpipe. And a straight through muffler would help as well.
You'll also need to considerably up the power of the car with a tune. Probably stage 2 considering stage 2 needs a turbo-back exhaust.

The R56 has 3 cats. 1 in the downpipe and 2 in the rest of the exhaust. If you're going custom it might just be easier to have them make the whole exhaust. Keep in mind though a straightpipe will be: 1) Very loud and maybe not very good sounding and 2) Illegal due to emissions and noise depending where you live. You'll also need to do something with the O2 sensor to keep it from giving you a check engine light.
Is this your daily driver or a track day car? If you're going to strightpipe the thing just to shoot flames and it's your daily you may find the noise annoying after a good while.
EDIT: It only has 2 cats. The third I was thinking of is a resonator in the midpipe.

I'd contact a local MINI performance shop near you and see if they are able to do this for you. They'd know the best honestly and give you a good idea at what all will need to be done.

Wow this thread is all kinds of ****ed up. Its not as easy as strap on a straight pipe an you shoot flames. To correct the Bombardier the R56 only has 2 catalytic convertors, one in the downpipe and another about 1' 1/2 past where the downpipe connects with the midpipe. The reason you see most performance cars shoot flames is that they are having unburnt fuel ignite in the exhaust. It looks cool as hell but, can be damaging to your turbo and your exhaust. Another way to do it is to have a misfire system but, that in itself tears more things up like the turbo, intercooler, and exhaust. Another way is to just go buy a flame kit if that is all you are looking for is to shoot flames. Oh you can have it tuned to shoot flames like what Manic is offering through Lowen at the moment.

any manic dealer can get you the tune, its only avaiable on stage 2 and up, for a stage two you need a fmic, intake, turbo back exhaust and they highly suggest a decat downpipe, I have the tune and love it. here is a link to see the flames that come out

hot exhaust gases help.. so does a catless DP. I would post a vid of my JCW but no GoPro to get nice tailpipe shots ;(
Stock JCW exhaust will pop off a lot more vs. Cooper S.. but it all depends on your end goal.
If you just want loud + flame pop; drop the factory exhaust for a straight pipe 2.5" from the DP back. If you do decide to get a catless DP.. wrap it.

Heat control under the hood sure helps..other than that, wrapping let's the DP stay hotter which in turn helps with the flame pop quite a bit.
If I'm casually driving for 5min or so, things cool down enough on my exhaust to where I don't get regular pop/backfire. As soon as you wind up a bit and things get warm again, it pops off on demand with throttle lift or shift at ~3500rpm.

Here's a video I took. I just asked for extra pops and bangs, and flames came with it I guess. I'm fully catless as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYpy_SnOQc0
