Possible to retrofit Black Line Tailights to pre-LCI?

As I was searching the 'net regarding retrofitting the black line tailights to my '10 MCS (pre-LCI), I came across a couple of topics and a video showing it already installed but no reference to how they re-wired the original connectors.

Somebody here in NAM has done it, as one of my searches led to this member's post of him being able to make it work. I tried reaching out but got no response...

Can anybody chime in?

The wiring is different. See more info here:

For pre LCI ( 2007-2010) you have some options for different rear lights: Plug and play.

Yes , they cut up the wiring harness then coded to maybe make them work, remember post LCI also configured in the LKM for the LCI light and the LCI also have the emergency braking light codes, which most likly does not work in the pre LCI LKM. Also they tapped / added the rear back up light as the back up light. Which would have to be added.

There must be a retrofit kit available soon for people with the R56 pre-LCI, including new wiring connectors or at least some clear instructions on how to do the retrofit and install the LED LCi oem rear lights. Including me, I know many miniacs that are willing to do this retrofit but just don't know how.... :(

Possible in the future at this time we don't carry a wire retrofit.

Black Line Tail lights

Thanks for all the replies to this thread. Though there has been a lot of interests on this retrofit to pre-LCI cars, there were additional information. I might snap some LCI tail lights on eBay and play around with the wiring and try to figure this out. If everything works out, then that will be the time I will get the black lines.

This is a Pre-LCI R56, I've done this on three cars already all with OEM wiring harnesses.

Looks good, so rewire and set the rear back up light into the JCW rear back up light. The problem is you have to add a rear back up light as the pre LCI dont have them, unless you have Rear fog light option and can swap a rear back up light lens into the bumper.

Do you have a list of parts?

Hey everyone. So this project had been on the back of my mind for a while, but I'd been hoping to find a little more info before attempting it. Needless to say that didn't happen, so I just looked up some wiring diagrams, compared the circuit boards and connectors on N14 & N18 tail lights, and went for it. I retrofitted the blackline lights to my 2008 MCS the 'simple' way (no coding). That being said, everything works fine (to my liking), but from what I understand from videos and information on here there is some functionality to the lights that I am not able to use without coding. Basically, the lights act as though they are standard N14 tail lights (minus the reverse lights)... two brake bulbs with running and brake intensity, and turn indicator, just with the addition of the led illuminated strips. The way they function as I've installed them is when turned on (headlights or running lights), both top and bottom brake bulbs illuminate at low intensity, along with the led illuminated strips. On braking, both brake bulbs illuminate at high intensity as the old lights would. I don't think the led strips change intensity at this point. The reverse signal pins were pulled from the connectors and one was run down to replace the right side rear fog signal pin. The car already has voltage checks and bulb warnings coded out so I can't speak to anything in those regards. I wanted these lights primarily for cosmetic reasons, so I'm not worried about any loss in potential 'new' functionality. They do what they need to do as brake lights, maybe I'll look into the coding aspect in the future. Remaining rear fog functions as before, as well as relocated reverse light. I'm happy to provide info on how I wired them for anyone interested.

What would you like to know? I'd be happy to help any way I can. My process involved some splicing of the wiring harness, though there is a way to do it without that. Another member on here reached out to me and we've been speaking about making a plug and play wiring harness, which he has already successfully done on his car. He also pursued the coding aspect and was able to achieve the LCI functionality of the lights which I do not have. But feel free to ask any questions you may have, here or in a message.

Does anybody know what modules to change with NCS-Expert to fit the updated tail lights with full function?

Or can somebody provide where to find the wire diagram for the lights?

I'm looking to do this myself. May I know which wires had to be spliced? Just the reverse light to the fog light? Does the preLCI foglight connector have an available pin for the reverse light? Do you have to splice both sides to the new reverse light to prevent bulb out errors? Thanks and sorry for the many questions!

You should be able to find the wiring diagrams on www.newtis.info. I never did the coding so I can't help with the NCS aspects unfortunately.

The way I wired it, I T-tapped into one of the brake light signal wires on each side to supply a power for the LED circuit in the LCI lights. As for the reverse, I just cut the passenger side rear fog signal wire and spliced that into the reverse signal from the passenger side taillight. The male connector for the rear fogs is the same as the one for the LCI lower reverse light, so you do the splice in the body compartment and just plug the connector into the new reverse light. I think you will get bulb errors without coding. I already had all mine coded out. I'll send you a PM with a general guide/walkthrough of the process if you're interested.

May i ask...Plenty of my friends used to have the oem black line rear lights like those on the photo that hkkenneth have..(pretty nice mini/setup btw)
Most of them have ALSO a center light "enable" some of them like yours HKKenneth dont.

For example in the photo i'm posting you can see that besides the 2+2 led stripes its also a middle/center red light open...But some others...DONT.
How is that possible where is the "trick" when some lights have only the 2+2stripes on running lights and other lights have also one more light in the middle.

Thank you!
