05 Garage door opener work in 04?

Does anyone know if the 2005 optional Universal garage Door Opener can be retrofitted in a 2004 MC? Where exactly does the unit fit, anyway?

It is unlikely that the 05 garage door opener will work in earlier cars. The garage door opener reportedly goes where the clock is in 02-04 cars. The clock is moved to the speedometer. If there is any chance or it working, you would likely loose the clock.

just saw this response on motoringfile.com

Question:
Dave -I was wondering if any of the '05 options could be added to an '04. Such as the Universal Garage Door opener?

Answer: I hope so! I haven’t seen an ’05 yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see. I guess it depends on what kind of electronics are involved in the UGDO aside from just the modified rear-view mirror.

FWIW, you can mount a garage door up behind in the sunroof controls like this:

I have 2 remotes up there, and the battery is located in a convenient location.

Ian's MINI-Circuit, in addition to providing auto-up functionality on your windows, can allow you to operate your garage door simply by holding up (or down) your door lock switch a little longer. Totally elegant, seamless integration, and EASY to do. (I have NO experience with electronics, and even I was able to figure out where to connect a couple wires and solder them-- although I did buy a spare opener just in case I screwed things up). This definitely works with '03 and '04 cars. A great garage door opener solution, if you ask me.

Lately, BMW seems to be moving towards having the UGDO as part of the rear view mirror assembly. If that is the case, the issue then becomes whether or not the older cars have the proper wiring above the headliner or the degree of difficulty in retrofitting the needed wiring.

Hard to say until they show up in the dealers/parts departments.
