Drivetrain Does Sport Mode remap the ECU?
Does Sport Mode remap the ECU?
So I have the BattleTune Stg 3 installed, and I am wondering what would happen if I put it into sport mode? Does this bring up a new map. I was just wondering because I like the obvious benefits of quicker throttle response, tighter steering, and pops/burbbles out of the exhaust. Thanks.
The way I have the non-linear map configured is that it tightens the steering and quickens the throttle response. I love the way it feels with sport on. Pretty sure it doesn't change the mapping though, you'd have to ask Battle to know for sure.
Ok, so just to be clear, I have the non linear programmed (Powergate>tune>stage3 loaded on my ECU). So how do you have that configured as a part of yours? Was it something you asked John for extra? OR do you just push the Sport mode and reap all the benefits?
I asked John to make me a Stage 3 non-linear map with stock throttle response. He sent me the file and I uploaded it to the car. The change in throttle response when you press the sport button is pretty dramatic. It doesn't cost extra, you just ask John and he gets it done.
I also have a linear Stage 3 map and with that one pressing the sport button only tightens the steering wheel. Throttle response remains linear with sport button on or off.
I love the non-linear stock throttle map with the sport button pressed. Boost builds practically instantly and the car feels really powerful. With the linear map you have to go full throttle to build boost, at part throttle it doesn't boost under most conditions.

On the non-linear tune, unless you asked for something different there is nothing changed with sport mode. All sport mode does is increase accelerator pedal input level for the same given amount of application. There is nothing changed in terms of boost levels, you're basically pressing the pedal further down quicker. It also increases steering feel by making it heavier.
Also, I have both tunes and have ran them back to back, one tune does not run any faster than the other. And any power difference is marginal. Albiet, non-linear at first does feel faster. I timed this running side by side with a Fiesta ST. Couple runs with each tune. All really just depends how you want your power delivered.

Thanks all for clearing that up. I was under the impression Sport Mode had a different ECU Map than regular in addition to the throttle response, heavier steering, and resonator activation. What I am understanding is, sport mode is different BECAUSE of making the throttle response quicker, not because it is mapped differently

If you have a boost gauge installed you'll notice that in sports mode the ECU keeps resting boost higher than normal so that when you get on it, you reach peak boost faster. For example, instead of venting ALL of your boost pressure (about 15 mmHG) when you are off the gas, it only vents some and you are at about 5mmHG.
What I have noticed is that with the linear map the car doesn't build boost unless you are almost at WOT so torque is low most of the time. On the street and in traffic it gets annoying have to press the throttle so much to get moving. The nonlinear stock throttle map with sport pressed doesn't have this issue. Torque is available as soon as you start pressing the throttle. Makes driving in traffic more relaxing IMO.
